The internet is filled with comments on new and fancy food places that pops up seemingly every other week. While those are great and exciting, I always have special affinity towards those really old school eateries that stands the test of time. Gerai Nasi Eng Kee, old school as it gets Gerai Nasi Eng Kee is a stall/shack that has been operating for decades by the old cinema (now Lotus Five Star, specialized in mostly Indian movies) at an area of Klang that’s seen a more glamorous time in the past. Zinc roof, old plastic tables & chairs, and absolutely sweltering hot under typical Malaysia ..read more

I think Ipoh doesn’t get enough credit for their contribution in the category of curry mee in Malaysia, more specifically, their dry version of curry mee. After being introduced to it not too long ago, this dish has become one of my favorites and a must-have whenever I’m in Ipoh, which is quite a fair bit since it is Jean’s hometown. Yee Fatt kopitiam, Ipoh On our latest trip to this old tin mining town, Jean suggested we visit Kedai Kopi Yee Fatt for breakfast, and so we did. The coffee shop has been in operation since 1955, just about as old school as you can get, before Malaysia as a count ..read more

Pyro is the new-ish kid on the block at Damansara Kim, and as the name suggest, fire takes the center stage at this restaurant. Helm by chef Louis with his experience at Burnt End, Pyro offers a rather unique menu with dishes crafted using high heat mangrove wood fire, as we will see later. Pyro @ Damansara Kim Located at the row of shops facing Jalan Damansara, parking is a relatively painless exercise at this part of Damansara Kim. The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated with minimal fuss, with the big and long bar counter alongside the open kitchen, providing diners a view of how yo ..read more

Whenever in Penang, there are always a few things to check off my list when it comes to hawker food exploits. There’s the usual char kuih teow, hokkien mee, laksa, and kuih teow soup, but if you veer just slightly off the beaten path there’s also kuih chap, one of the hidden gems of Penang hawker delight that’s equally as delicious, but super hard to find outside the island. They say, if you want to have the best and freshest ingredients when it comes to food, grow it yourself. While this isn’t particularly feasible for individuals who stays in the city, for the owner of The Gift Tilapia at Seremban, they’ve pretty much done exactly that. The Gift Tilapia Restaurant, Seremban The Gift Tilapia Restaurant is a farm to table operation that’s been operation in this quiet part of Seremban for well over a decade. They have a farm growing their own tilapia (you probably guessed it from the name), live udang galah, and free range chicken. The farm is fed by natural water ..read more

When it comes to Japanese Ramen, we are spoiled with a huge variety of choices. The scene has exploded since the craze initially started in Klang Valley some decade and a half ago. In recent years, this particular segment of Japanese cuisine stabilized somewhat with only a few newcomers popping up every now and then, one of the latest being Ramen Hitoyoshi, an outlet that caught my attention while finding ourselves looking for a lunch spot at Paradigm Mall in PJ a couple weeks ago. Japanese food is surely one of the most popular foreign cuisine in Malaysia, from the early days with only sushi & sashimi, to the craze surrounding teppanyaki, ramen, yakitori, izakaya style restaurants, and more. Well, today we’re going to talk about yet another branch of Japanese cuisine that is seeing a bit of a revival after coming into Malaysia a little over a decade ago – tonkatsu, or breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet. Tonkatsu Maisen @ Sunway Pyramid My first tonkatsu experience was Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen @ Pavilion back in 2011, already over a decade ago. One of the latest to the s ..read more

Several weeks ago I chanced upon a post on Instagram by Choi Yen that captured my attention, it was a magnificent looking bowl of Penang Curry Mee. Being a huge fan of this dish, I knew I had to find a chance to taste it myself, so last weekend, we went to Kepong just for this. Jia Li Mian Curry Mee at Kepong The restaurant is called Jia Li Mian, a play of word that meant “home noodle” but also sound like Curry Mee. The restaurant is actually a second branch, with the original being located at Pandan Jaya. Parking situation in Kepong can sometimes be a drag, but fortunately Jia Li Mian Restau ..read more

Ever since Pepper Lunch got a resurrection and opened up a branch at i-City Mall near where we stay, Jean and I have been going there a few times for their beef pepper rice. Then one day, she had the brilliant idea and said “Why don’t we try to make this at home?“, and I replied “You mean why don’t you make this at home?“… so I.. I mean, we did just that. And the result was awesome, so I want to jot down the recipe for my future reference, and maybe you may find it useful too.
