For chefs and foodies alike, it's an exciting harbinger of spring: the announcement each year of the new Michelin-star ratings in the latest edition of the Guide Rouge for France. With few exceptions, Michelin has been rating French restaurants since the year 1900. (The history of Michelin restaurant ratings is here.)  And now the new 2024 guide has just come out and once again, because I live to please you, I've compiled a list of all the starred restaurants across Provence, the Côte d'Azur and Monaco for you. Make Your Own Glass Ornaments
The Provence Post
by Julie Mautner

In his studio in L'Isle sur la Sorgue, glass artist Guillaume Roux is offering a great idea for the holidays: the chance to blow your own Christmas ornaments (boules de Noël).  A session lasts about 15 minutes and costs €20 per ornament. First you'll choose your two colors. Then using a steel "cane," Guillaume grasps the molten glass and adds the color, making it melt and fuse. Then you'll take over to blow the ball into shape and add the hanger. He says it's appropriate for ages 8 and up.  Guillaume also offers a more comprehensive four to five-hour "initiation ..read more

River Kayaking in Provence 2023
The Provence Post
by Julie Mautner

While the days dwindle down to a precious few, as Willie Nelson says...and back-to-school lurks just around the corner...Provence is still crazy crowded...and hot! River kayaking is a fabulous way to while away a few hours, get cool and deliciously wet, have a river swim if you want one and see some amazing scenery. Luckily, river kayaking in Provence is super easy and the local outfitters will be open for at least a month or two. I encourage many of my clients to try this and no one has told me they didn't love it. Get out there! You can kayak (and stand-up paddleboard) on ..read more

Today the Magnolia Network launches a seven-part “docu-series” called La Pitchoune: Cooking in France, about the Courageous Cooking School, set in Julia Child’s former home in the South of France. Episode #1 is now streaming on the Magnolia app, HBO Max, Discovery Plus and other channels.  It's a great story. In 2015, Makenna Held happened on an article in the New York Times (“The House that Julia Built”) about La Pitchoune, the home that Julia and Paul Child created on a former potato patch in 1966. The land they used was owned by Simone (Simca) Beck and her husband Jean Fischbacher. Si ..read more

La Table des Amis de Provence is a new non-profit association based in St. Remy, designed to highlight the food, wine and culture of Provence through meals, cooking classes, winery tours, artisan visits, live music and more. La Table des Amis is bi-lingual and multi-cultural, open to all ages and nationalities. While French members are wanted and welcome, the group will probably appeal more to expats, much the way that BritsNimes, AAGP, the American Club of the Riviera, Network Provence and others do.  Because the La Table des Am ..read more

The Carrières des Lumières (Quarries of Light) is a magical space in a vast cave-like quarry at the base of the hilltop village of Les Baux de Provence. There in the cool darkness, 100 video projectors splash 2,000 still and moving images over an area of more than 75,000 square feet, onto the 45-f00t-high walls and onto the stone floor, while 74 speakers provide the perfectly choreographed soundtrack to what you’re seeing.  The sound-and-light show changes once a year and is one of the most-popular, most-visited sites in Provence.  On March 4, the Carrières la ..read more

The Provence Post
by Julie Mautner

Because I totally live to please you, once again I've rounded up a great selection of American Thanksgiving celebrations here in the South of France and in Paris. Who attends these gala soirées? Local expats of course, but also hungry French folks and other Europeans, travelers, house guests...whomever!  Over the years, many of my French friends have told me they love the idea of celebrating this American holiday...to meet new people, to sample unusual foods, to learn the history and traditions. At a friend's Thanksgiving in Provence a few years back, one French guest told me ..read more
