I cannot believe I haven’t told this story. In my youth, teens, during the Cold War. Old enough to know about the CW, and how we were all in danger, all the time. Nuclear War, MAD, the whole deal. It was a tense time specifically then, the US and the USSR were getting kinda chippy. I was aware. Visiting relatives in the bustling city of Kermit, Texas. It’s an oil field town. (Kermit was in this blog a decade or more ago for BS involving criminally charging nurses for reporting a doc to the medical board, just search the site for Kermit). Nature called, went to the throne room. Somewhere in thi ..read more

I’m starting this post with a disclaimer, and while it’s been a hell of a lot of days since I posted, disclaimers are only an occasional thing. Generally. So my return starts with a disclaimer. Please enjoy this setup Tweet, and enjoy the foreshadowing: then Let’s start with the premise, and then I’ll fill in the details. Who is the best person to break bad news? Short version, it’s an ER doctor! Why??? Well, let’s get into that. When in med school one of the thousands of papers we were assigned (I think it was my preventive medicine class but I cannot swear), one was about how to bre ..read more

How am I listening to breath sounds (and hearts) during the Covid-19 pandemic?

How am I listening to lungs in our Covid-19 isolation area? Thanks for asking! I could use a disposable stethoscope, but there aren’t enough of them to go around. So what now? Well, I was fortunate enough to find an answer when I went to Level 1 Scrubs in Fort Worth and was introduced to the Eko Duo. It’s a combination digital stethoscope and single lead EKG reader, it bluetooths to my iPhone through their app and it doesn’t need the traditional stethoscope earpiece. The free app allows recording sounds or ekg single leads should you be interested. As you can see there’s a detachable tradition ..read more

My yearly Christmas favorite, reposted: Courtesy of the British National Health Service (click the banner): NSFW. Funny, but Unsafe for work, unless your work involves STD’s in which case it’s required. It’s my seasonal favorite post, and I hope it’s one of yours. Not the STD’s, the funny song with equally amusing illustrations. The backstory, from a previous blog post: I have seen several searches of this blog for the British National Health Services’ “12 STI’s of Christmas“, and wondered why. The answer: the NHS site no longer carries the wonderful show, for reasons unknown to me. As for th ..read more

This is depressing, and I know you’re not here to be depressed, you’re here because you already are, or you wouldn’t be checking a site that’s essentially never updated. I liked blogging, then I worked at it, then it kinda died with new SocialMedia, and now I romanticize the Good Old Blogging Days the longer I’m active mostly on Twitter. I keep this because I’m not bold enough to be a quitter, and because I may need to come back someday. Thanks for being here. No related posts ..read more

Naval History and Heritage Command : About In 1972 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized recognition of 13 October as the Navy?s birthday. In contrast to Navy Day, the Navy Birthday is intended as an internal activity for members of the active forces and reserves, as well as retirees, and dependents. Since 1972 each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion "to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service." Fair winds and following seas. No related ..read more
