Major Correction - Boeing Delivered 1000th 787 and it was to Air Lease Corporation with China Southern Airlines as operator.

UPDATE: Ok so I got wrong again!  Dominic Gates of the Seattle Times informed me that the 1000th 787 indeed went to Air Lease Corporation who leased the aircraft to China Southern Airlines.  This means that all three airplanes were delivered roughly at the same time but the 1000th delivery went to ALC.  Sorry for the confusion! So a couple days ago I was thrown off by an error in my spreadsheets which was caught by an eagle eyed reader of this blog. Turns out I mistakenly credited Turkish Airlines for a delivery last October when they did not take any 787 that month.  Conse ..read more

Boeing Delivers 1000th 787

Boeing delivered the 1000th 787 since program deliveries started in September 2011...almost 10 years ago. The aircraft is either ZE455 (LN 1057, JA 881J) for Japan Airlines or ZB971 (LN980, B-20EH) for Air Lease Corp leasing to China Southern Airlines as operator.  I am trying to find out which one has the 1000th Dreamliner to be delivered.  Both these airplanes had their delivery flight on 4/21 and 4/22 respectively and are both 787-9.  While this is an important milestone for the company and the 787 program itself, it is a bittersweet one given the trials and tribulation ..read more

Big changes for 787 program as manufacturing defects, demand and Covid-19 sends Dreamliners into storage

The past year has been a challenging one for the Boeing 787 program. Even before COVID-19 became a household word, global commercial aviation was already facing a downtrend in the demand for widebody aircraft like the 787.  2019 saw a decrease in new 787 orders to such a point that Boeing was considering a rate cut. Covid-19 added to the production and delivery stresses for the 787 but now the manufacturing issues with the circumferential fuselage join where the skin of the airplane does not meet certain flatness or smoothness criteria at the the areas of fuselage join has all but stopped ..read more

Boeing has fallen far behind in delivering 787s to customers this year for a different reasons but the slow down deliveries has occurred at both Everett and Charleston though for different reasons.  Charleston seems to be catching up to their schedule whereas Everett is still far behind. Assuming a 7/month delivery rate (77 for each build site) Charleston currently has delivered 71 while Everett has delivered 63.  There are thee more 787s scheduled to be delivered this month: 2 from Everett and 1 from Charleston thus the final numbers should be 71 from Charleston and 65 from Everett ..read more

Boeing Tries to Salvage 787 deal with Emirates at the expense of 777X

On the eve of the Paris Air Show, Dominic Gates of the Seattle Times put out an article where he interviewed Emirates' President Tim Clark.  In the articles Tim Clark did let it be known that Emirates let the LoI for the 40 787-10 lapse and is now using this lapse order as a bargaining chip with Boeing to defer much of the 777X order which numbers 150 aircraft. According to the articles, Boeing is trying to get the 787 deal back on even if it means deferring a sizable number of 777X to a later date so far out that they will probably never be delivered.  The article also revealed tha ..read more

Boeing Photo As expected, the 787-10 beat out Airbus' A350 to replace the 777-200s in their fleet.  Air New Zealand announced the order for 8 787-10 along with options for a further 12 today (May 27th New Zealand time).  The new 787 order will take their Dreamliner fleet to 22 after the last airplane is delivered. Deliveries of the 787-10 will start in 2022 and run through 2027. While the 787-9 and 787-10 are 95% compatible, Air New Zealand opted for the GE engines on their 787-10 while their 787-9 fleet will operate the Trent 1000 engines.  Rolls Royce has been havin ..read more

Boeing Financials: 787 Deferred Production Cost down to $22,029 mm from $22,967 mm last quarter

Under the cloud of the 737 MAX groundings in the wake of the Lion Air and Ethiopian crashes, Boeing announced it's earnings for the 1st quarter 2019. for the 787 program, the deferred production cost decreased to $22,029 mm from $22,967 mm.  This is a very healthy decrease of $938 mm.  Boeing attributed the almost $1 bn decrease to the investment they made in manufacturing system but also in part to the supply chain efficiencies as well as the increase in rate to 14/month. One down note from the earnings announcement is the cancellation of Jet airways orders due to the financial co ..read more

787 and 737 MAX, A Tale of Two Groundings

The two horrible 737 MAX 8 accidents within 6 months of each other and under similar if not outright identical circumstances brings to mind the grounding of the 787s 6 years ago that were prompted by LION batteries that are used by that aircraft.  In each case there are similarities but also notable differences in the issues and how the different parties reacted to the safety of flight issues that were causes for both groundings. In order to properly understand the context of these issues we should review what happened in January 2013.  In a matter of one week, multiple 787-8 belong ..read more
