I was interviewed: What Have I Been Putting People Through All These Years?

By Scott Douglas Jacobsen The interviewer and the hosts were wonderful. No complaints. I’m just being silly. For years, though, I took to never doing interviews. I allowed one interview of two questions with the founder of The Realist, Paul Krassner, who is no longer here (dead). He published that for, maybe, 50 years or something insane. Seriously, that’s an impressive feat no matter how you slice it. He used to feature some of the hidden icons of the comedy industry like George Carlin, or even better Lenny Bruce. If I received any as far back as a decade ago, then I was simply inc ..read more

Formulation of Humanist Policy Internationally, with Considerations
Canadian Atheist

By Scott Douglas Jacobsen Humanists International in Denmark Humanists International hosted its 2023 combined World Congress and General Assembly in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the Scandic Copenhagen in early August. It was the first World Congress in almost a decade. A large gathering of hundreds of leaders within the humanist movement. At one point in the General Assembly, a proposal was made for a paper to make a specific statement on the war in Ukraine. A significant reference in the debate – highly respectful, by the way – between delegates from different countries’ Freethought organizat ..read more

Weekly Update: 4-Jun-2022 to 10-Jun-2022

There was no Weekly Update for the last two weeks, so there’s a lot of catch-up to do here. There was no Weekly Update on May 21st (which would have covered May 14th—May 20th), because I had no power for most of the weekend. That was because of the derecho that killed 11 people, so I consider myself truly lucky that we only lost power. We also had part of a tree fall against our house, but, again, got lucky; it was the top third of a very large tree, and it fell against our house leaves-first, so, it mostly just brushed the dirt off our siding. (It was our neighbour’s tree and they were actual ..read more

Here’s your Canadian Atheist Weekly Update for 7-May-2022 to 13-May-2022. This week’s items [9-May-2022] Crisis pregnancy centres criticized for ‘deceptive’ practices It was inevitable in the fallout from the leak that abortion will probably become illegal in large chunks of the US, that Crisis Pregnancy Centres would come into the spotlight again. For those who don’t know CPCs are fake abortion clinics, run by anti-abortion groups—often faith groups—that pretend to be legitimate health providers in order to lure women in, and scare or shame them out of getting an abortion. They have been caug ..read more

Last week, Weekly Update took an unscheduled break largely due to the fact that there wasn’t really anything all that interesting to report. I also expected this week would be a busy week with the start of the Ontario election campaigning. So I decided to take the opportunity to take a break before the rush. What I didn’t expect was the leak of the US Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v Wade, the abortion decision. That ended up completely overshadowing the Ontario election startup. Suddenly, conservative politicians across the country were forced on the back foot, scurrying to double-spe ..read more

Here’s your Canadian Atheist Weekly Update for 16-Apr-2022 to 22-Apr-2022. This week’s items [18-Apr-2022] Canadians consider certain religions damaging to society: survey On Monday, Angus Reid Institute released a report based on a pair of surveys. The first was a survey of people in the four largest non-Christian religions—Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism, and Judaism—done in partnership with Cardus. The second was a general population survey done by ARI on their own (though they over-sampled evangelical protestants for some reason). There’s a lot we could talk about in that report. Different journa ..read more

Here’s your Canadian Atheist Weekly Update for 9-Apr-2022 to 15-Apr-2022. This week’s items [11-Apr-2022] Church fueled segregation of Indigenous peoples This is a new angle on the history of the relationship between religion and Canada’s indigenous peoples. I can’t imagine anybody would argue that part of the goal of colonial powers—including the churches—was to break indigenous peoples apart, to drive wedges between them. That was the point of banning them from speaking their own languages or practising their cultural traditions; it isolated them from their parents and communities. But appar ..read more

Here’s your Canadian Atheist Weekly Update for 2-Apr-2022 to 8-Apr-2022. This week’s items [5-Apr-2022] Lux Média: Into the Home of the Québec Conspiracy Movement It never ceases to amaze me just how small and interconnected the world of Canadian hate is. I haven’t thought about La Meute in at least a couple of years, but here they are, poppin’ up again. And now, there’s a connection between them and… QAnon, to no-one’s surprise. And… Nazi alien bases on the Moon? Okay, gotta admit, that last one was a bit of a surprise. [7-Apr-2022] Hate speech and death threats: Canadian academics harassed a ..read more

2022 Canadian Atheist Awards – Results

The COVID-19 pandemic weighed heavily on the 2022 Canadian Atheist awards, forcing me to scale some things back, and do some things differently. Nevertheless, I’d say it all worked out! 2022 Canadian Atheist awards The Canadian Atheist awards are a very informal, just-for-fun annual awards given out by me, Indi, Canadian Atheist’s managing editor. There are no actual prizes of any sort; even the statuette is just 3D render. It’s just a way to give some recognition and love to people who I think deserve it. This year, due to the pandemic, the awards had to be scaled back quite a bit. Normally ..read more

The final award in the 2022 Canadian Atheist awards goes to the Person of the Year, the person who had the greatest positive impact in Canadian secularism, humanism, atheism, and freethought in 2021. 2022 Canadian Atheist awards The Canadian Atheist Person of the Year doesn’t necessarily need to be Canadian, nor atheist, though, of course, both of those things will help one’s chances. The award is given based on a person’s actions—either a single, big, notable act, or a pattern of action throughout the year. The action doesn’t need to have been undertaken explicitly in the name of atheism, hum ..read more
