General Mills’ Gluten Friendly Products A Dangerous Setback For Actual Celiac Patients.
Together & Fearless
by Tyler
4y ago
General Mills may soon release a line of new products labelled as “Gluten Friendly” which, we can only assume, is targeted at non-celiac gluten free dieters. However, it turns out this product is not quite as friendly as they claim. It does not actually meet any GF requirements by law. In what seems to be a rather distasteful marketing ploy, General Mills has placed a “GF” logo on the front of the box which bares a striking resemblance to the actual Certified Gluten Free logo. For those with celiac disease, the real GF logo is an extremely important designation that implies a safe prod ..read more

Navigating those heart-breaking first “no’s”.
Together & Fearless

It’s hard to describe to someone who hasn’t been through this how gut wrenching it can be to tell your child “no” to everything they used to know as normal. I’m writing this post because it’s something I would have wanted to read. Think of all of the places where food is part of your life. That cake pop they might get at Starbucks while you grab a coffee. That grocery store free cookie. Church groups, family get togethers, birthday parties, holiday events, block parties — you get the idea. This post is dedicated to getting through those first ”no, I’m sorry, but it’s not gluten free” moments ..read more

Gluten Free Play-Doh Alternatives
Together & Fearless
by Amy

I was surprised when I found out Play-Doh contains gluten. I had honestly never thought about what it was made of before. This information made me reconsider all of N’s craft supplies because there is no room for gluten in our gluten free home. As you can imagine, between contaminating her hands and nails, the risk for accidental ingestion is high. Toddlers love to put their fingers in their mouths. Additionally, any surface it touched would need to be thoroughly cleaned to prevent contamination. We knew we had to find an alternative. Here are N’s new favorite gluten free Play-Doh alternative ..read more

Review of Imaware’s At-Home Celiac Disease Test
Together & Fearless
by Tyler

There’s now an at home test available for celiac disease from Imaware Health. But, is it a replacement for a visit to your doctor? After N was diagnosed with celiac disease, it was recommended to Amy and I that we both get tested as immediate family members. Not only was it recommended, but we were both naturally curious and, of course, we would really like to know which one of us provided the genetics. If one of us tested positively for celiac disease, we’d have answers to both of those questions. The Traditional Blood Test Amy went the traditional route and asked ..read more

Gluten-Free Grocery Shopping 101
Together & Fearless

When N was first diagnosed, gluten free grocery shopping felt super intimidating. Shopping with a toddler can be challenging on a good day, let alone shopping with a toddler and reading every single label. Thank goodness we found a solution! Here are my tips for shopping gluten free: Have a good working knowledge of reading labels BEFORE you go. One great resource for this is The National Celiac Association’s ROCK website resources page. They have an entire section dedicated to allowed vs not allowed foods in addition to a step by step guide to reading labels. https://raisingourceliack ..read more

Gluten In Medication Disclosure Act – Act Now!
Together & Fearless
by Tyler
4y ago
The Gluten in Medication Disclosure Act was introduced by Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut in 2019 and uses the same language as the bill introduced to the House of Representatives in April 2019. For gluten sensitive individuals and especially those with celiac disease, it is imperative that this bill is passed by Congress. At this point in time, there is no legislation that requires a medication manufacturer to list potential gluten-containing ingredients on their labels. The Gluten in Medication Disclosure Act is “A bill to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to re ..read more

Tips for hosting someone with celiac disease
Together & Fearless

Hosting someone with celiac disease, a food allergy or other dietary restriction can feel daunting. Most people want all of their guests to feel included, but it’s difficult to know the ins and outs of any of the aforementioned diets when you don’t live it yourself. Even so, there are small things you can do that make a big impact! 1. Share the menu in advance. Let your guests with dietary restrictions know the menu in advance of the party. I always reach out beforehand (unless someone beats me to it) and ask about what will be served. Then, I can prepare and bring similar — but gluten ..read more

Mellow Mushroom: A Great First Restaurant Experience with Celiac Disease
Together & Fearless

Eating out with celiac disease is tough and scary. The first time after N’s diagnosis was daunting. There just aren’t many restaurant options that we feel comfortable with because of the risk for cross-contamination. Remember, we saw her in her worst moments and there’s a constant fear of her getting sick again. That said, we know that it’s very important to try and maintain some sense of normalcy. We needed to find a celiac-safe pizza restaurant! Exploring Options There are a number of online resources you can use to find celiac-friendly restaurant options. Believe it or not, it tur ..read more
