IS IT THE RIGHT TIME TO INVEST
My Plexus

The past few weeks have seen the markets make enormous amounts of money and profits return to the patient investors. The popular index, the BSE Sensex has breached the 52,000 mark. What this implies is that from the lowest figures of March 2020, till mid-June of 2021, there has effectively been a doubling of the invested value. This rapid pace of recovery has left aside many who wanted to be out of the markets and perhaps time themselves back and put them in a spot about how to get back into the investment game. It is a case of chewing fingernails while they wait on the sidelines or perha ..read more

The Favourite Small Cap scrips of fund managers
My Plexus
by Prasunjit Mukherjee

The available small cap universe to fund managers might be a huge one and the choices across the spectrum are humungous. Making the right choice from such a large universe is a big headache for any fund manager. Amidst all the choices available and with over 24 schemes currently in operation, there is a theme that runs through. It is almost unthinkable that with nearly 2000 available scrips so many of the fund managers will have a set of favourites which match. The Power Dozen It is not my endeavor to find out how right or otherwise these scrips are and how much they have made or not. It is ju ..read more

Small caps are the new hot trend!!!! What nonsense.
My Plexus

Most of the equity schemes are very well defined in terms of investment orientation and the ability of the fund manager to move outside very well defined parameters is almost negligible. Meaning a midcap or a large cap will have a very structured framework within which a fund manager will need to operate. And that will not say much about which way the fund manager is looking in terms of a longer term perspective. And that is important to find out and the only way we can have an insight into where the fund manager is looking is by finding out the exposure in the diversified schemes. Thus, if we ..read more

The second stage of Covid and your investment plans
My Plexus

March is a cruel month. Year end blues and work pressure are a constant irritant. Bosses have their brief to offload on people down the line. “Maaliks” need to push for higher revenue and business targets and keep their 15% ROCE intact. And amidst all this the mango people must tread a fine line to keep the anxiety away. And of course in the middle of all this, we have the COVID resurgence and the start of the second wave. In the first stage the markets tanked by nearly 45%. This time around, the same has not happened. YET!! But the lockdown has also not happened. Yet!!! But there is every cha ..read more

Are the Small cap funds expensive?
My Plexus

What is a PE ratio? And what does it signify? And does it make it easy for us to understand and predict? Let’s start at the beginning!!!  The P/E ratio is the ratio for valuing a company that measures its current share price relative to its per-share earnings (EPS). … It can also be used to compare a company against its own historical record or to compare aggregate markets against one another or over time. Essentially it means, the ratio gives and indicator how cheap or expensive the stock has become relative to its profits. And the same could be used to compare with ..read more

NFOs of 2019: What, Who, When and were they successful?

NFO!!!! New mutual funds from fund houses are launched at such regular intervals now that it is a wonder how anyone manages to register in our minds. And even if they do, do they really make a mark? And if they do actually make a mark, does it register in our already overcrowded memory cells? This and some other questions are what we are going to investigate here. And of course, we will have to declare a winner, which we will certainly do at the end. But first, the DISCLAIMER. We are only talking about equity and equity oriented schemes here. Debt and debt oriented schemes are not a party to o ..read more

Why this could be the miracle year for the stock market
My Plexus

When the markets last hit 46,000 (BSE SENSEX 30), I wrote in our blog ( AT 45000+ OF THE SENSEX, SHOULD I SELL?) that investors should stay invested and invest further. The recent run up to the indices figures more than bear out the sagacity of that call. This write up then was required as the most frequent question we faced was “should I not sell now”. The questions have started anew, now that the NIFTY 50 has settled above the 15000, and the BSE SENSEX 30 is above mount 52,000. How much do I think the markets will go up by? While it is difficult to put a number and no market watcher will ha ..read more

Madam Finance Minister

Madame, the year gone by has been terrible to say the least. And being the FM during the last year was, I am sure a most harrowing and taxing experience for you and your team.  My sincere commiserations and best wishes for the times ahead. But Madam, as you know so well there has been a tremendous pressure on so many of the MSMEs, salary earners and daily wagers to keep their home and hearth going. I am told a large number of manufacturing organizations are also feeling the pinch. Pondering and strategizing over these complex issues is your domain and it is far beyond my competence/ inte ..read more
