Part II
In the heart of the Darien I asked an indigenous lady whether they had many tourists visiting. Considering the remoteness of the area her reply surprised me “Yes. Many”. “From what countries do they come?” “From all over the world. Myanmar, Bangladesh, Africa” And then it dawned on me. We’d found the human trafficking route.
Indeed our companions later that night, Somalians, Nigerians and Vietnamese would calmly inform us that for a cool US$1500, we too could be smuggled from Colombia into the United States. But there was no way for them to understand our purpose for coming here. They ..read more

Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t want to train kung fu with a lightsaber?
Unless I get a call from George Lucas, this is the closest I’ll get.
“Learn a new skill in 2020 lockdown” they said. But knowing me, learning one new skill at a time wasn’t enough so in addition to training Shaolin kung fu in the mountains of China for more than a year, I decided to add some green screen animation and digital compositing effects to my bag of video editing skills.
Enjoy!!

Diaries of a Shaolin Warrior Ep9
What is it to be Shaolin? The western world was exposed to the word Shaolin only half a century ago, seen worldwide as performance troupes with incredible acrobatic ability, feats of superhuman strength and the ability of the mind to overcome pain. But little is seen outside of mainstream documentaries such as National Geographic and BBC who portray a glamorised version of Shaolin.
Shaolin has a rich history spanning more than 1500 years and for centuries, they have taken on secular disciples, warrior monks that do not necessarily have to abide by strict relig ..read more

Diaries of a Shaolin Warrior Ep 7
During the COVID 19 coronavirus epidemic of 2020, training Shaolin kung fu in the mountains of China might well end up being the safest place we could have been. We were at the base of the Kunyu mountains, relatively remote. We had clean air, food and water.
We were young, fit with strong immune systems but for the safety of our neighbours, the staff and to minimise community transmission of the disease in the country, we didn’t leave the school for 2 months. But that was fine. We trained every day.
