What makes a city a city?
SV Sea Odyssey

We’ve seen a city or two Matt and I have been to many cities in quite a few different countries. We started our journey along the Atlantic coast of France in the city of La Rochelle. We left LR for the south of England and up the very impressive Hamble River to Swanick. Leaving England, we have touched many cities along the Atlantic coast of Spain, Gibraltar, the Southern coast of Spain, and the Balearic Islands. Sailing eastward, we hit along the southern tip of Sardinia, the northern coast of Sicily, and the southern coast of Italy. Leaving Italy, we sailed across to Montenegro and the sout ..read more

Breakwater at Setur Marina, Finike, Turkey For the best experience with this article, please see the 40-second video ⇒ Here.  Just play along… go on… it won’t kill you. In this article, we are going to catch you up on some light nautical terms, talk about breakwaters, and discuss what we do behind the breakwater. What is a breakwater & why is it so important? A breakwater is a wall that borders a marina, an area of coastline, or anything that requires protection to protect it from the waters that would otherwise affect that area, primarily waves that increase due to fetch.  ..read more

Our Return to Sea Odyssey During COVID

Our return to Sea Odyssey during Covid Emily:  Matt and I teamed up on this one. I’ll set the stage for you.  Then Matt comes in and sums up perfectly the reflective side of things in the second half. We left in a hurry.  We didn’t mean to leave in a hurry but we did indeed leave all of a sudden.  And it went like this ~ We initially bought tickets sometime in October for Thanksgiving Day.  They got canceled.  The cool thing about that was we could re-book for any time.  The flexibility was a nice luxury.  Unfortunately, this allowed us to dilly dally m ..read more

YouTube, Catch Our Drift?

Finding YouTube sailing channels When we first decided to cash in all our chips to sail the world, we googled sailing schools.  Then for some unknown reason, we googled sailing on youtube.  We couldn’t believe it when we found there were people sailing around the world already… AND they were documenting their adventure! What!? This was when Delos was bigger than La Vagabond, Chase the Story was breaking out, and the Wynns just got their boat.  A lot has changed since then… So we started planning and building what we thought was going to be our new project.  Made a kickass ..read more

BB ~ Our anchor pregame
SV Sea Odyssey
by Emily

Have you ever wondered how boaters anchor?  Can we just anchor anywhere?  How do we know where to go?  What to do?  And my favorite question “Do you just anchor in the middle of the ocean?”  This last one is an interesting question.  If you don’t know, you don’t know.  It’s not like non-sailors are just sitting around talking about sailing. What is an anchor pregame? Well, it’s very much like a sports pregame.  You’ve got opposing teams with opposing commentators talking about the upcoming game.  Our anchor pregame is just that.  It is everythi ..read more

BB – The Dinghy Dilemma
SV Sea Odyssey
by Matt

Do I even need a dinghy? If you plan to be at anchor then you’re going to need a good dinghy, also referred to as a tender. What ever you choose to call it, make sure that it is reliable and inspires lots of confidence. It’s basically your boat’s car made for the open ocean.  It’s something every boater will eventually need. Even if you are the type who’d prefer to swim ashore, I’d suggest getting one. Michael Phelps, you too. You have to remember your family and friends might like to show up ashore dry to do some touring or grab a beer and get some of that yummy food they smell on land ..read more

Wow!!  60 knots of wind!!            We had no idea…                       but now we do.   I’ve wanted to talk about this day for a while now, well ever since it happened really.  It was such a crazy moment in time.            What do you do… Hmm where to start in our little story?  Let’s start with the wind, the antagonist.    It’s not just “wind” Something interesting we’ve come to appreciate from the med is the wind.  Surprisingly n ..read more

Feeling the luck, soft sailing lessons

What is luck? Luck is a funny thing.  What is it really?  How is luck bestowed on its loyal subjects?  Even for the most devout, vying for luck with their countless charms, rituals, and mantras… cries to the almighty gods to be on their side, their luck seems to turn.  How come?  What happened?!  They did everything right, right? When we are born, does our lucky star have a predetermined fixed amount?  Can we run out of luck? Things can go awry so quickly on a boat and the outcome can be downright disastrous.  So let me speak for the both of us when I sa ..read more

Introducing “What’s in the Fridge?”
SV Sea Odyssey
by Emily

“What’s in the Fridge” is dedicated to both the life of food and the food of life. What does that even mean, Emily?  Let me explain. Our relationship with food Food.  Your best mate really, never to leave you.  Like it or not, your constant companion through all the days of your life. Sure food is most notable for sustaining life… my life, your life, our lives, but this constant companionship creates a, idk, bond.  You start latching on to certain foods.  Your life experiences dictate what is on the menu.  Arguably, this could just be a case of ..read more

If you’ve read “Introducing What’s in the Fridge?” then you know about the weirdos.  You know these weirdos have been ganging up on us and we had to do something.   Stop reacting to comfortable patterns and trained behaviors… start creating an avenue of acceptance and enjoy the journey of change.
