Sometimes our good intentions come across as insensitive and painful when attempting to offer support after a loss. On May 3, 2019, my husband died after a 9 month battle with cancer. I know everyone meant well, but at a time of gut wrenching pain, some comments made my heart sink deeper, and at times even my blood boil. It’s apparent we all want to do and say something at a time of grief, but we oftentimes feel awkward and helpless, and babble cliché comments that are better left unsaid. I’ve made a list of what to say and not to say based off my own personal experience.

Hey ya'll I’m Annie! I’m a 27 year old widowed mom to 12 month old miss Charlotte. My sweet husband Sam devastatingly passed away in May of 2019 from a difficult 9 month battle of cancer. It tore my soul into pieces that I’m still trying to pick up and put back together that you can expect to read about here. Charlotte and I are also social media influencers on Amazon and Instagram. Miracles. That’s only something that happens on Hallmark movies right? That may be true unless you’re me. If you’re me, at the ripe age of 26, you’ll be standing in the front of a classroom when you answer your phone and hear the words “you have a sister! A big sister! Her name is Stephanie and she is 5 years older than you.” What!? How does one go over 26 years without knowing half of me is living only four hours away? How does one take this kind of news?
