Cataract Lens Replacement and Rejection: Understanding How Our Bodies Work

I wrote a piece a short time ago on what I was learning from cataract surgery. I am still learning, which accounts for this piece and certainly others to follow. Here’s a link to the earlier piece: Cataract Surgery (Mine) and What I Have Learned So Far Next Lesson Learned and Surely Not the Last About 10 days after the second surgery, which followed the first surgery by a week, my eyes began to get worse. They started to get redder; they were irritated and inflamed and weepy. I resembled someone who had been drinking — lots. I could barely tolerate light. And, I was remarkably uncom ..read more

My co-author Ed Wang and I will be discussing our forthcoming book, Mending Education (published by Teachers College Press at Columbia University 2024) at the Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work. We will share the key points in the book — the “Pandemic Positives” we identified and how to make them “sticky” to improve education writ large. Join us, join in, share thoughts. Watch for links and flyers in the coming days. We look forward to starting the conversation ….. which we hope will lead to mending education. Save March 14th between 1–2:30 p.m (est) for a Webinar was originally publ ..read more

Cliches/Idioms Located in Art: Find Them, Explain Them, Share Them

Enlarge this art image howsoever you can so you can see each element within it clearly (I say this after eye surgery when my vision is far from perfect — though it is already on its way to being vastly better). Then, after looking at the art image, think about all the cliches/idioms within it — the cliches/idioms we use without considering their origins or their true meanings. There are at least 10 there, embedded in this piece of art. It’s actually a fun activity for adults and one they can share with children. Students can do it with teachers. It’s clever for English language learners ..read more

Cataract Surgery (Mine) and What I Have Learned So Far
Karen Gross

Let’s start with this reality. I had both eyes surgically repaired a week apart (Feb. 14 and 21) and I am now truly on the mend. And, I have a real excuse for typos. I only half jokingly told an audience of 95 plus educators some 27 hours after the second surgery that while I could not see or real or think too well, I was otherwise perfect. (Why I actually was running a workshop with my co-author is a topic for another day….try denial as a starting point.) But, the surgery has given me pause to reflect on a variety of issues (see above — I use that word with intention) and since wri ..read more

Karma and Kraft

Just a thought as I ponder the NFL coaching carousel and the hiring of younger coaches, leaving renowned coach Bill Belechick without a coaching home. Yup. Now, there have been observations about ageism. Pete Carroll hasn’t been hired either. Then there are reminders of Belechick’s prior cheating. And there’s the reality that Belechick hasn’t been good with quarterbacks other than Brady. He likes power too it seems – he wants every job. But, I think a key point has been missed – and it is relevant for anyone with a long workplace history. Bottom line: Belechick worked for Kraft, the ..read more

Meanness: Some Thoughts….
Karen Gross

Recently, I have encountered more than my share of mean people. I get that there may be many reasons people are mean. But, as someone who generally believes that kindness wins the day, I have been disinclined to respond to mean adults with meanness. Perhaps, upon reflection, meanness is the only language these folks can understand. And while most contrary to my nature, I might make more headway with these folks if I were mean back to them. Ouch — it hurts even to think about it. Start with the neighbor across the street who can, on occasion be nice, but who has a wickedly mean side. He y ..read more

Tests that Miss the Mark: How We Assess Athletes and Students

Kindness Rocks created by students at Highlands Elementary School, Danvers, MA (2023–2024) I just finished an article appearing in the WSJ about the test used to determine the likelihood of success of QB’s in the NFL and how the test failed in the context of CJ Stroud (who did poorly on the test although the test company suggests his results were invalid). Stroud, unlike Bryce Young who had a stellar score, has been a rookie QB success by every other measure. Given the reliance of this test (although to be sure other factors are considered in selecting QBs), Stroud was selected after Young in ..read more

Kindness Rocks displayed at Danvers High School on MLK Day 2024 (done by students at Highliands Elementary School under the guidance of Art Educator Kris Smith I have written about the creation of Kindness Rocks on several occasions, and these programs are referenced in the new book I co-authored with Dr. Edward K.S. Wang titled Mending Education (Teachers College Press Sept. 2024). By way of example, see: Kindness Rock Projects: They’re Needed More than Ever Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend an afternoon event at Danvers High School. At the event, student art was displ ..read more
