November 30th, 2023 marked the second anniversary of joining forces with B+H Architects to create B+H Biomimicry. To celebrate, we thought it’d be a good opportunity to reflect on our journey so far by sharing some highlights and painting a picture of our vision for the future. Over the past two years, our journey has been driven by a profound motivation to redefine the relationship between the built and natural worlds. The decision to join B+H and the larger SJ Group was one where we recognized that the influence, breadth of talent, and global reach were key ingredients to catalyzing a movem ..read more

Today’s problems will not be solved with the same thinking that has created them. Nature. OVERVIEW: Starting in July 2022, we are launching our first full Biomimicry Excursion in partnership with Canadian Mountain Helicopters. Biomimicry Frontiers will be closed on September 30th for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation asks that we take time this week to reflect on “What does Truth and Reconciliation Mean to You?” To us? Truth and reconciliation are key to our work. Our Elder once humbly shared that her people, “have been doing biomimicry for thousands of years”. Biomimicry is rooted in the ideas of Indigenous Peoples. Without those thousands of years of research and development, our very field may not exist. Without their guidance, our very species are at ..read more

Re: Death

Life is cyclical. As it grows, it eventually decays. As it lives, it must also die. And it is through this cycle of release that things can be reconfigured and regenerated.   As part of our submission to the Lagi Fly Ranch 2020 submission, we propose a design that is a reflection of natural cycles. Its structure is designed to decay to allow regrowth. It thrives despite death. It invites participants to engage with it, to plant on it, to use the winding ivy or the sprouting weeds to create structure. And when those plants die off with the season, our structure celebrates that release ..read more

This month, Biomimicry Frontiers put the finishing touches on a beloved project by installing the final piece of art at Tridel’s Form Building in the heart of Toronto. Biomimicry was a part of the design concept from the very beginning. In collaboration with OCAD students, we reimagined the FORM building using our Design Fiction methodology. As part of this process, students created various designs ranging from an air-filtering building facade inspired by the lungless salamander and the sea sponge, to a heat loss detection and response system inspired by the human ..read more

When I think of cities, I think of sterile environments full of concrete, brick, and glass structures that tower towards the sky. When I think of wood structures, I become more whimsical, imagining cozy log cabins and adventurous treehouses. Recently, these two worlds have begun to merge and architects and planners are asking themselves: why can’t we have high-rises in our cities that are built out of wood? CBC’s popular environmental newsletter, What on Earth, has highlighted the numerous benefits of making high-rises out of wood. To begin, it would greatly reduce emissions linked to steel a ..read more
