A couple of years back I was sent some samples from a project in Bulgaria that’s making wine directly for the US market. I even featured their rosé as it was quite enjoyable and made from the local variety of Gamza (Kadarka). The importer, G&B contacted me anew to ask if I’d be willing to look at their new batch of wines which of course I was. The line is now a good deal larger with several varietal wines that feature international (French) varieties in them as this is how […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription ..read more

Six Priorat wines to know right now

We find ourselves in that fine moment where it’s neither terribly cold, nor terribly hot. Traditionally known as either “spring” or “fall”, it does seem to be a shorter and shorter moment each year as the climate leans in hard to six months of summer and a summer that’s exceedingly extreme. It was nice meeting you Goldilocks… While I’m the kind of person that will drink red wine all year long, even if it’s full bodied, now is a fine time for those who prefer to eschew it during the […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription ..read more

Personally, it’s a point of pride for me to say that my history with Croatian wines goes back some two decades now. There were my first tastes of the Dalmatian red variety, Plavac Mali at a bar in Dubrovnik before that gorgeous town became a touristic nightmare. Then there was travelling the southern regions extensively for a book in the mid-aughts. That was followed up by watching the awkward teenage years after Croatia entered the EU in 2013 and the winemakers were continually finding their footing. And then there’s now, […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription ..read more

Food Through Wine: Yezi, Zagreb, Croatia

There is that moment when you’re on the wrong side of 40 when you walk into a restaurant and think, “Did I perhaps make a mistake?” It’s not the trendy décor nor the fact that the servers are solidly half your age, but, in my estimation, it’s usually the fact that there’s a DJ, spinning in a dining establishment when I feel that I know my place and and realize said DJ-equipped restaurant, is not it. Such was the experience at Yezi in Zagreb when I was there for the […] For full access, please log in or purchase a subscription ..read more

Vinart Grand Tasting, Corpinnat & Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Last week saw me make a return to the Vinart Grand Tasting in Zagreb, Croatia. My absence had been exceedingly long as the last time I went was in 2017 where I led a tasting of Grenaches from Spain as, in addition to the main tasting event, they also hold many classes in the days before. It wasn't the intention to be away for so long as one of my countries of focus is Croatia. But, both 2020 and 2021 were out as the pandemic made travel restrictions too onerous to bother and, given that the Gran Tasting happens in the first week of March, it made 2022 seem a bit too soon as well it was still O ..read more
