This months T-SQL Tuesday comes from Alex Yates (dev-ops wizard and funny guy!) (b|t) – Thanks Alex! I struggled with this at first, as generally, I like to jump on new things and give anything a try, I don’t dismiss things just because someone else suggested them…. but… around 3 years ago, there was one thing I dismissed – I find it hard to believe now looking back, I can’t imagine doing my job without it…. that thing is.. PowerShell!!! I remember my manager saying “PowerShell is awesome, DBAs need to use PowerShell, I encourage you to use PowerShell ….” or words to that effect. And ..read more

T-SQL Tuesday #118 – Your Fantasy SQL Feature So this is going to be short and sweet (hopefully) My first thought when I read the title was the Activity Monitor, and then all the software I have used in my career to monitor SQL Server, such as Grafana, AppDynamics, SQL Monitor, Sentry One, Power BI, Powershell, etc If I could have a fantasy feature, it would be an Activity Monitor that showed me all the Activity I care about, blocking, file growth, deadlocks, long-running queries, replication latency, top SQL, query plans, tempdb usage etc etc…. *I posted this a few weeks ago, but it’s very applicable to T-SQL Tuesday so it’s been repurposed so I can join in! Today’s article is part of T-SQL Tuesday. This month’s T-SQL Tuesday is hosted by Tracy Boggiano ([b]|[t]), is all about Linux. As a DBA primarily of Microsoft SQL Server, I like to keep an eye on the latest features – it’s safe to say when it was announced that it supported Linux I was probably among the first to get it ..read more

Someone asked for advice today about preparing for and passing Microsoft Exam 70-761: Querying Data with Transact-SQL – I figured I’d share my experience of this exam. This is one of the required exams on the way to MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Development. When you sit and take a Microsoft Exam, you are required to sign an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) which means you won’t divulge specific information about the exam, so if you have come for a nitty gritty deep dive, you won’t find it here! My journey to taking exam 70-761 began at SQL Bits when I attended a talk given by Itzik Ben-Gan (legend ..read more

I am super excited that the great folks over at dbatools.io are releasing version 1.0. It’s insane to think they have over 550 commands now! So, on this momentous day of releasing dbatools version 1.0 I am releasing blog post 1, I have contributed to dbatools a little over the last 12 months or so and I literally use it every day as a DBA so I figured the least I could do right now, is share some of the ways I use dbatools, so in this post we will talk about how I update SQL Server using dbatools command Update-DbaInstance. So the manual way is to copy the CU onto each node and run it, I ..read more
