Today we celebrate the longest day of the year and the start of the Summer. (Wednesday June 21st 2023 at 15.37 BST). Many people will be congregating at special places like Stonehenge (an ancient monument that is aligned with the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset) and other places of natures worship. Solstice comes from the Latin word’s sol, meaning Sun and sistere, meaning to come to a stop or stand still. On the day of the June solstice, the Sun reaches its northernmost position, as seen from the Earth. At that moment, its zenith does not move north or south as during most other day ..read more

Halloween – why we love it here at ‘Carla’s Curiosities’

Here at Carla’s Curiosities we love Halloween! The crispness of the air as we enter autumn and the way that natures colours change from greens to oranges and reds, and for me, the anticipation of the excitement of the night itself. In the run up to Halloween, I love making a big fresh bowl of popcorn, with melted butter, sugar and salt and cosying up to watch my favourite scary movies. If you haven’t already seen, I recommend watching Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. It’s a 1922 silent German expressionist horror film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok. Iconic! I ..read more

The Rise in Popularity of Curio Antiques
Carla's Curiosities

A curio item is defined as a unique and rare object, while an antique is a collectible item that is, at the very least, a century old. Collecting curios dates back to the end of the Middle ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. In the early days, the elite displayed their curio collections in open rooms, which was ‘in vogue’ for almost a century and a half. The trend was a past-time of the rich who could afford traveling and to purchase curios on their travels. Curio cabinets made an entry in the 16th century. They became the standard way to display art, porcelain figurines, and other item ..read more

Holly Albright studied at St. Martin’s College of Art and Design in London where she honed her artistic and sartorial skills while living in the cultural capital of Western Europe. Going on to work for and with Alexander McQueen, Julien McDonald, Giles Deacon, Emilio de la Mora, and Pam Hogg, she could not fail to be influenced by London’s pervasive music, fashion and art scenes, all of which continue to inspire her painting and other work today. Simultaneously, adding to those influences was another side of the city — a side which can be found in all cities — the shady characters of the night ..read more

Figurative art in the home
Carla's Curiosities

Figurative art depicts a recognizable subject and while abstract art can evoke the feeling or idea of a particular scene or subject, figurative art is a clearer depiction, though it does not require photographic realism. Art depicting the human figure is generally considered to be a classic, timeless choice when choosing a piece of art to display at home. Figure studies reminiscent of life drawing often feel calming and meditative, portraits tend to evoke emotions and a more complex and detailed picture can capture the viewers’ attention by telling a story. When choosing figurative art of a hu ..read more

February marks LGBT+ history month. Throughout history, art has been used to celebrate, to show defiance and to represent the soul and, with this in mind, few groups have been as expressive, vibrant and powerful in the art world as the LGBT+ community. We are proud to feature these emotive and eye-catching pieces from artists celebrating different aspects of this: The rainbow – now a universally recognized Pride symbol- features in many artists work and displaying a piece of art depicting a rainbow can show support for the LGBT+ community in as bold or subtle a way as preferred. Two artists fe ..read more

It is LGBT history month. A whole month to celebrate and observe the history of all things ‘La’, yes, I recently binged watched ‘It’s a Sin’ and wow was I moved. It certainly provided a small incite into young gay males living in the 80’s, from coming out to parents/or in some cases not, to going out and having great times, with some resulting in severe consequences such as HIV and AIDS. I was in my teens during the 80’s and felt the fear even as a female, the blood situations, gosh my mother was obsessed when I did my work experience at a dentist- filled me with fear and even as an adult and ..read more

An art wall can be a uniquely personal and very striking display, whether designed to showcase your artistic taste to visitors or to be kept in a private room for your own enjoyment. It is an easy way to tell a story as well as build up an art collection over time by choosing affordable art pieces or art prints.. The prospect of decorating a blank wall can be exciting if a little daunting, for the options are endless, but a good starting point is to consider the art you already have. Art: a gift with meaning
Carla's Curiosities

The art world is vast and captivating, which can make the thought of choosing a piece of art to give as a gift feel daunting, but a print can make a truly unique and personal gift and well worth the effort, especially at Christmas. If you have seen inside your recipient’s home and know the kind of artwork that they display, this is a real advantage; you can think in terms of their tastes in colour scheme, interior décor, subject matter and spacing. There’s no need to be especially literal: for example, buying an art print depicting a tree as a present for a friend with a love of trees. Instea ..read more
