My Kid Might Offend Yours. Here’s Why:
Jones Mom

It is so important that children learn the importance of being an individual. They need to know that their thoughts and feelings matter. Kids saying no in certain situations is their way of expressing their individualism and feelings. But are we doing the right things to teach them these critical life lessons? A quick story… “Can I please play with that when you’re done?” “No. It’s mine.” That response crushed sweet little Lizzie. She desperately wanted to play with Tim’s toy car, and at five years old it really hurt to be told “no.” “Timothy! How rude!” Tim’s mother scolded. “Give that car to ..read more

Put an End to Fighting Over Food Having a very picky eater is hard on the whole family. The whining, the arguing, the crying; it has to stop! Fixing a picking eater is actually very simple. The hard part is implementation. Stand your ground How often does this happen in your house: “Here’s your supper! I made chicken and veggies!” “NOOOOOOO!! I want mac n cheeeeese!!” You already made supper for your family, you’re not happy that your toddler won’t even try it, you’re tired and ready to go to bed, but you still have to give the kids a bath and clean the kitchen. “Fine. Just eat some mac n chee ..read more

Homeschool Groups Allow Us to Take Field Trips! Believe it or not, homeschool kids get to take field trips. And not just outings with the family. Actual field trips with a lot of other homeschool kids. This is thanks to the many groups that exist in order to give kids who are homeschooled the “school” experience. We are part of several different groups, one of which is all about field trips! Shade Tree Apple Orchard A few weeks ago, me and the kiddos went on a field trip to a local apple orchard. It was SO much fun! To get the day started, the group was split into two smaller groups. Our group ..read more

Teaching Kids to Share

Don’t Do It! You read that right. I said do NOT teach your kids how to share. This Montessori component is not as well-known as others, but let me explain why it works. Sense of Ownership Younger kids, ages three and below, have no immediate reason to learn how to share. They are in a very sensitive period of life in which they are trying to fully comprehend the definition of “mine.” At this age, children are beginning to appreciate the fact that “this is MY bottle,” “this is MY toy,” “this is MY bed.” Of course, you would never ask your infant or toddler to share things like rattles or beds w ..read more

The Best Trick to Teach Your Kids How to Write Their Names.
Jones Mom
by Jones Mom

As homeschool parents, we all want to do whatever we can to ensure that our children learn how to recognize letters and spell. Teaching kids how to write their names is a primary focus. All parents want to help their little ones recognize and write their names before going off to school. Including those who don’t homeschool. What do people usually do? The most commonly used exercise is tracing. Usually, this happens in a workbook. It is also done by having kids trace over something written by their parents on a piece of paper. The idea is that kids will trace their name so many times, that by ..read more

Teaching Kids Responsibility with Chores
Jones Mom

Are chores really necessary?  It seems that they are fading away.  Perhaps children just need to be children and have fun while they’re young.  I mean after all, won’t they have enough responsibility on their plates once they hit the “real world?” No.  The truth is, without chores they ultimately won’t have many responsibilities in life.  They may not even have any of real significance. With chores, teaching kids responsibility is much easier! Why teach kids responsibility with chores? The most important thing for parents to remember is that we are not raising kids.&nb ..read more

Toddler Backpack (with Wolves!)
Jones Mom

My five-year old daughter needed a new backpack for school. She also loves wolves. Actually, she’s obsessed with them! For her birthday the only thing she asked for was a visit to a wolf sanctuary so she could see real wolves in person. She owns more than ten books about wolves; some fictional and some educational. If you ask her why she likes wolves so much, her only response is, “I am a wolf.” So where exactly her love of wolves comes from no one knows. We only know she wants as much “wolf stuff” as possible. We homeschool, but my daughter starts a tutorial (basically school except it’s only ..read more

An Easy Way to Prepare Kids for Math
Jones Mom

Before our young ones run off to school or even before we begin formally teaching them at home, we all want to give them a head start.  Specifically, preparing our kids for math is something we all want to do. One very easy way to do this is by changing the way we word a few common interactions.  What do you mean? For example, nearly every mother in the world has given her infant one Cheerio at a time.  Usually when this happens she will something similar to, “Here is another one.”  This situation is good, but it could be better. In order to prepare your little one for math ..read more

Saving Money to Travel

Saving Money to Travel We’re taking off to travel the world, but do we have enough money?  The honest answer right now is…not really. Our goal is to be debt free while we’re traveling.  Since we currently have some debt, we are nowhere near our goal of having “enough” money to travel. So in order to save money to travel, we’re starting with paying off all of our debt.  A few things aren’t really cause for concern.  For example, we’re selling our house before we go (we’ll actually make a profit!) and we’re selling the car too.  The amount we owe on the car is about t ..read more
