Aerial Dream on Android TV. (Download for free from Google Play.) If these look a little ... familiar ... that's because they are. If there's one thing I love about Apple TV, it's the "Aerial" screensavers. The slow flyovers of some of the greatest places on Earth — and, soon, of Earth itself — are almost as much fun to watch as anything else you'll find in 2018. They're beautiful. They show you parts of the world you might otherwise have never seen. They're almost a reason to buy an Apple TV in and of itself. And the default "backdrop" screensaver on Android TV (and specifica ..read more

Apple released its first set-top box over a decade ago, but it hasn't kept up with low-cost alternatives that gained traction in recent years. Maybe that'll change soon, though. There are discussions in Cupertino to release a budget-friendly dongle, according to The Information. It's not difficult to understand how Apple fell behind. Amazon, Google, and Roku are dominating with their own streaming devices that are available for half as much as the Apple TV. It's the same functionality between them, but consumers want affordable hardware above tvOS' best-in-class user interface. The ..read more

Apple's new TV app is a smoking hot pile of garbage
TechnoBuffalo » Apple TV

Apple launched iOS 10.2 and tvOS 10.1 on Monday, both of which include access to Apple’s new “TV” app. It’s a confusing name, given that we now have “Apple TV” the app and “Apple TV” the set-top box, but I digress. It’s a pile of garbage, and it shows exactly how messed up the streaming video market is right now. First things first: Apple TV (the app) is a glorified portal to Hulu, HBO Now and content Apple sells (or you’ve purchased) in iTunes. You can also add CBS, Starz, Showtime, The CW, Tribeca Shortlist, MUBI, CW Seed, Crunchyroll and CuriosityStream, but really you’re just using “Apple ..read more

Announced at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in June, single sign-on is a feature designed to eliminate the need to sign into apps individually. Trust us: Typing in your user names and passwords into multiple TV apps gets real old, real fast. Single sign-on promises to make what used to be an arduous process into something simple and elegant. One its website, Apple explains how this feature works: Now when you enter your cable or satellite subscription credentials on Apple TV, you get immediate access to all the apps in your pay TV package that support single sign-o ..read more
