Photo Courtesy of Venicio Inc. During evolution of our species, humans developed the ability of foresight. Perhaps it was due to our vast diversity, the spirit of innovation, or simply the need to survive. Whatever the case, our brains are able to see situations and try to predict what’s next. Not everyone has the same level of perception, and rarely is it always accurate. But when it is, it can benefit us and even save our lives. In some instances, when our perception is incorrect, it can be comical. Have you ever spoken to anyone over the phone and tried to imagine how they looked simply fro ..read more

The back seat

Brent Pace on Unsplash The phrase, “I call shot gun” is a widely known expression in the US. If you’re not familiar with it, the person shouting this phrase is making a claim for the front passenger seat of a car and the first person to say it reserves it for themselves. As far as I know, there is no such declaration securing any enviable spot in the seats behind the driver. The back seat doesn’t have the same pizzaz or prestige one experiences while sitting mere inches ahead of the others. Perhaps what makes the front seat so coveted is that the view is less obstructed, and although that pers ..read more

Photo by Sebastian Davenport-Handley These past two years have been challenging for many so it’s understandable as we approach the end of this year, why anyone would be eager to turn the page and start fresh. And for many, making New Year’s resolutions is an important part of leaving the past behind and beginning anew. Some people make a big deal about their New Year’s resolutions. They’ll post them on social media or bring them up frequently in conversations. Oddly, research has shown that most people don’t do very well on keeping their resolutions, yet every year, the ritual echoes in the th ..read more

Author’s note. This article is dedicated to my dear mother and long-time editor. She always had so much hope, belief, and love for me. I will keep her memory alive through my writing Never would I have guessed that this would be the final picture that my siblings and I would take with our mother. Four years ago, we gathered for a post-Thanksgiving gathering with her. We all had so much to be thankful for. Putting those thoughts on paper in a manner fit and deserving for her is no minor feat. My hope is that when you have finished this article, you’ll have a glimpse of the impact and inspirati ..read more

A list of 63-year-olds who can go to their mother for good counsel is probably rather limited. And those whose Mothers still lived in the same home they grew up in 63-years ago, would be an even smaller list. And I am certain there is only one name on the list of 63-year-olds who can say their Mother has acted as their editor on over 250 of their articles. I am heartbroken that this week, I have to remove myself from those lists, and can only now find solace in the knowledge that now my mother is at peace. To the world, she was known as Mabel Marguerite Schriefer de Dunia. Many cherised her as ..read more

Photo by Ben Hershey on Unsplash As a young boy growing up with two older brothers, I tried many times to prove myself worthy to play certain games with them. “Three flies up” was a baseball-themed game where one person was up to bat and they would hit the ball high into the air. The others raced to catch the ball before it hit the ground and the first person to catch 3 flies won that round and took their turn to hit. Catching fly balls was much easier for me than hitting them. At the age of seven, when it was my turn, there were plenty of swings, misses and ground balls which didn’t count tow ..read more

Photo by When children begin school, core subjects like mathematics, science, social studies, and reading receive the most emphasis. Some teachers, however, wish other subjects with more practical applications could be taught. Ones offering life skills or effective communication could positively impact children in ways that science or social studies rarely cover. Wouldn’t it also be beneficial if there were some way to include a few courses on dignity, integrity, and common sense? Maybe the reason why math is taught instead of integrity is that because two plus two always equals four, while in ..read more

Photo by Inja Pavlić on Unsplash Technology and innovation are two elements that distinguish humankind from the rest of the animal kingdom. While many anthropologists believe the earliest humans existed nearly 200,000 years ago, the first civilization formed approximately 12,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. The regular flooding of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers provided a fertile soil allowing for robust harvests, and was the beginning of what is sometimes known as the Agriculture Revolution. An abundance of crops provided opportunities for trade which in turn, allowed people time to develop ski ..read more

Photo By Helena Yankovska on Unsplash This week in the U.S., we celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday. While its origins date back to 1621, it wasn’t until 1941 when the fourth Thursday of November became its permanent home on the calendar. To date, there are about 17 countries that celebrate Thanksgiving – many with different dates and different reasons. Giving thanks needs no holiday, but at least it’s a reminder for us all to be thankful. We also get reminders from big business and the retail industry telling us a good way to show our thanks is through buying plenty of their merchandise. They ..read more

Phot by NASA Negotiations are often a necessary yet unpleasant part of transactions. There have been plenty of studies with many of them not favorable to the person who tries to play nice. We’ve all heard the saying, “nice guys finish last,” but have you ever questioned its veracity? Have you ever tried to break that mold or prove that quotation wrong? According to one article, those who try to play nice end up paying 11% more than those who were tough negotiators. A different article suggested that “nice” women made substantially lower incomes than the disagreeable ones. It also asserted that ..read more
