The new Outlook (Monarch) licensing hugger-mugger

I wrote previously about the new Outlook client and have been using it since that time. It's fast and fluid, but it leaves much to be desired in certain specific workflows. Another thing I missed, but a colleague of mine, prompted me: the new Outlook app for Windows – codenamed Monarch – will not initially work unless your specific accounts are appropriately licensed on the Microsoft 365 side. This is a bit tricky, and I'm cutting corners here just a bit, but the initial limitation with the new Outlook app was that you had to license your email accounts for Microsoft 365 Apps to be allowed to ..read more

Fixing a missing profile picture in the MacOS Sonoma Lock Screen for the user

This is a quick one, but something I found frustrating with MacOS Sonoma. For a fresh install of MacOS Sonoma on a brand spanking new MacBook Pro 16" (M3 Pro), I've added one user - myself. This is how the user looks like in ? > System Settings > Users & Groups: All great! My picture in there. But when I lock the device, this is how it looks like on the lock screen: Zooming in to the actual account: Hold up! Why is there a medal for the account image instead of my photo? I double-checked that my user account has the right icon. Something fishy here. I created another account, and ..read more

Building a company culture: Lessons learned during 2 years

I wrote about my latest journey two years ago: starting a new company called Not Bad Security. I was fresh out of Microsoft and had an existing business. Still, I also wanted to focus on building a viable and self-funded company that focuses on defending companies against cybersecurity threats. We're taking steps forward each day, and it's simply a joy to work on the plans with the great team we've assembled. Post-pandemic, I guess we've all slowly realized that IT work, as it was in the past, won't return. Possibly ever. I've come to terms with this, and I think I've found a model that suits ..read more

Building a home gym

I would have stared at you blankly if you had asked me a couple of years ago what I would most likely build. But then, I got hooked on going to the gym (see my progress report here and here for the second year). I like the current gym I go to, as it has less equipment, more free weights, and more Strongman/CrossFit-style gear. You can view a 3D map of the facilities here. Anyway, when I knew it was finally time to build our own house, I carved out a separate room in the design to house my future home gym. The idea is to train three times a week at home and once at my regular gym (to meet with ..read more

Why do I have two webcams?

I'm a big proponent of having video on at all my meetings. I realized the need to turn on video just before the pandemic in late 2019. I typically use Microsoft Teams, and I'm using an external Canon prosumer camera as my webcam: It's connected via the Elgato Cam Link 4K device and acts like a regular USB-connected webcam. You can read more about this setup here. I must only remember to turn it off when not being used - like at the end of the day. But why do I have two webcams, like in the picture above? Two reasons. Reason 1: Multiple computers I have a nice Windows-based workstation in my ..read more

It's time to eat more vegetables - starting with broccoli! ?

For 2024, one of my goals is to learn to eat more vegetables. It isn't a promise; it's more of a goal, and I am generally pretty good at achieving my goals. I'm also pretty good at NOT setting goals that are not realistically achievable - often due to lack of time and focus. But why? Ever since I was a kid, I've been very picky about the type of food I eat. My parents honestly struggled with my upbringing in that sense. The usual foods I enjoyed eating as a child were cucumber and the whitest white macaroni. Note, though, that the cucumber had to be peeled first. Since then, especially durin ..read more

Using Plausible for website analytics

What feels like an eternity today, I wrote about removing Google Analytics from my blog in early 2021. I've stayed away from Google Analytics in all its incarnations since then, and I'm happy. However, I then switched to Cloudflare Analytics. While I initially appreciated it, I soon learned it had too much data that I didn't need. Today, I'm utilizing Cloudflare only for DNS proxying, and that's it. But, I still felt I could use some analytics for my website. What content seems interesting to my readers? What content is not read at all? Some brave souls self-host website analytics tools. I co ..read more

Initial impressions with the MacBook Pro 16" M3 Pro

Exactly one year ago, I leaped and switched to a MacBook Pro 14" laptop. You can read my initial impressions and my long-term review after 100 days. It was, and still is, a fantastic and utterly performant device. However, immediately once I got it, I found myself hoping I'd opt for the same device but with a larger screen. For a year, I contemplated if I truly would appreciate the larger screen. I then had an opportunity to upgrade, and after carefully considering the pros and the cons, here we are. The specs The device is a MacBook Pro 16" M3 Pro, with 36 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. The ..read more

Last year, Microsoft announced Microsoft 365 Copilot - the premium productivity assistant and features powered by generative AI. In this - lengthy - blog post, I'll look at all aspects of Microsoft 365 Copilot, such as licensing, onboarding, the underlying technology, the (promised) productivity gains, and governance. Changelog I anticipate updating this blog post throughout the year, so here's a quick changelog on the recent updates. [Jan 18, 2024]: Initial version What are Copilot services? Copilot is a marketing brand by Microsoft, and while it's a specific service, it's also an umbrella ..read more
