There is a time in your life when you meet someone special, someone who has that unique spark or that “it” factor. You have no idea why you’re drawn to that someone especially a newly minted Zumba instructor whose English at the time was just as proficient as my grade school Spanish. Her English, by the way has improved exponentially better than my Spanish! It started the winter of 2017. I had just retired and was spending my first winter in Florida, Orlando to be specific. By this time, I was a hard-core Zumba enthusiast and novice solo traveler. I scoured the internet for Zumba classes i ..read more

#75HardChallenge You Bet It Is!!

“Age is just a number,” is a concept I’ve always seemed to embrace although sometimes I have to admit, in retrospect, my escapades can be viewed as a little crazy! Usually my catalysts when participating in my “extreme” undertakings are my daughter and/or niece who are both adept in convincing me that I am up to the challenge. In my 50s and 60s I’ve rappelled off of the side of a mountain in Cancun, zip lined over trees in a jungle, snorkeled in the Sea of Cortez while large brown sea lions brushed up against my skin, ran a 5K obstacle course Mud Run, and finished a 25 mile bike ride thr ..read more

An American Tragedy: The Murder of George Floyd

My heart is broken. The sheer horror, pathos, dehumanization, and evil depicted in that video will never be erased from my mind. What is seen can not be unseen. I keep agonizing about what George Floyd’s last thoughts were. He started his day breathing in the fresh air of Minnesota, running errands, saying hello to people on the streets, thinking about his children, his family, and his life in general. Whatever transpired in that store that day catapulted George into the deep dark abyss of America’s shameful and horrific racial epilogue. What about those policemen? What in their collective ps ..read more

Beautiful Terry, inside and out! I couldn’t believe that text….. it must be a mistake. It seemed like I had just left a condolence message on her voicemail hoping we would connect, but knowing all too well how her heart was breaking by the loss of her dear sister, I would just give her time. Terry and I were work buddies. Whether we were giving each other the all knowing side eye, or just commiserating about life in general, we “got each other.” We both retired from corporate life four years ago. She lived in the Midwest, and I was a recent transplant from New York to Florida. We both bought n ..read more

One baby boomer’s continuous battle with the scale Public Enemy #1 Shelter-in-house, social distancing, self isolation, imposed quarantine…….. essentially, all mean the same thing……. resisting that ever living lure of my nemesis, the refrigerator! Going to work, hanging out with friends, or simply running errands puts distance between me and my attempts to limit grazing but at least for the short term, life as we know it, has changed. Having abandoned one of the many diet guru’s advice to continuously graze throughout the day in order to keep my metabolism firing, in favor of intermittent fast ..read more

ID 90388472 © Typhoonski | Dreamstime.com Since moving to Florida, I sometimes feel as if I’ve opened my own Airbnb. Every month, or at least that’s how it feels, we have company. The length of stay varies from two to five days, but at our place we’re flexible! Whenever I get the call, my answer is always the same, “That’s fine, when are you coming?” I know that sounds crazy but my response is always heartfelt. Over the past months I’ve come to value each visit because every experience is uniquely different. Prior to our move to Florida, my husband and I had very few friends in common. My frie ..read more

Becoming a grandmother is indescribable. It’s a gift like no other. From the moment you lay eyes on your precious grandchild, you are absolutely smitten. The love you feel for your own child was the first time you truly understood how love for another human being knows no bounds. A mother’s love is so deep, so complete, so all encompassing, it can’t be described….. it’s beyond words. The adage, a mother is as happy as her least happy child says it all. When your first grandchild is born, it’s as if the brightest sunshine and bluest sky illuminates and envelopes the entire family with love. As ..read more

It’s 6 am and I’m sitting on the tarmac at Newark Airport, a little annoyed by the delay. Waking up at 4 am, rushing around like my house was on fire, racing to the airport, missing the exit, silently screaming at the thought that I might miss my plane, only to hurry up and wait. Thirty minutes later the plane was enveloped by blue skies and billowy white clouds. Heading south to the home I didn’t realize how much I missed until that very moment, felt surreal. Seven weeks earlier, I received a call at 2:36 in the morning. As I gripped the phone, clutching my chest, because after all, a phone ..read more
