Today, we are continuing our series in the book of Matthew. Our theme has been to follow the promised King into his kingdom. In our passage this morning, Jesus will describe a royal wedding feast. Are you hungry? What are you having for lunch? We usually do something simple at home. What is your favorite? My family probably knows: chips and salsa or PB&J (strawberry jelly and hearty bread). But, if I were invited to a wedding feast, I would look forward to the cake. I would also love to eat smoked salmon and beef tenderloin if they had it. How about you? What if it was a royal wedding ..read more

INTRODUCTION  Thanks, Butch and Worship team, for leading us in worship. There is no other name than Jesus. That is true. But to be candid, I think people don’t always live like it is true. I don’t always live like that. Let me explain authority another way.  BUGATTI This is the Bugatti La Voiture Noire, the second most expensive car in the world, valued at 18.1 million dollars. I will give it to the first person who comes up here, but I don’t have the authority to do so. I would love to actually give one away, but I don’t have the power to do it. I found the picture on their we ..read more

The Gospel Coalition and Crossway are giving away the book  From the publisher:  Is there evidence to believe the Gospels? The Gospels―Matthew, Mark, Luke, John―are four accounts of Jesus’s life and teachings while on earth. But should we accept them as historically accurate? What evidence is there that the recorded events actually happened? Presenting a case for the historical reliability of the Gospels, New Testament scholar Peter Williams examines evidence from non-Christian sources, assesses how accurately the four biblical accounts reflect the cultural context of their day, com ..read more

INTRODUCTION  Who was Jesus? Was he  A first-century Middle Eastern carpenter’s son,  A great historical religious leader,  A teacher and miracle worker Or a prophet and reformer,  Who was he? That is the question our passage ends with, but we begin with as we continue our series in the book of Matthew, reading Matthew chapter 21, verses 1 through 11. We see Jesus finally at his destination after miles of traveling south to the limelight of the capital, Jerusalem.  DIFFERENCE  So, what difference does he make in the 21st century? The Path to Be Last: Matthew 20:17-28 (Sermon)

Introduction In grade school, we would have to line up single file to go to the bathroom, recess, and cafeteria. On several occasions, one particular girl budged— She would cut in line. Let’s call her Bathilda. When she did, my blood would curdle, and my teeth would clench. I would think to myself, “That is not fair. BUDGER!” I probably whispered words of contempt to my little back-of-the-line buddies. That might have been what the disciples felt when they heard James and John’s mom advocate for her kids to get the best seats when Jesus came into his kingdom.  QUESTIONS What does it lo ..read more

Leaving Everything To Follow Matthew 19:16-30 WEIGHT  Thank you, worship team. Would someone volunteer to help me, please? Come on up here for a second. Pick this up. How easy is that to move? That is fifty pounds. Now, what about this? It is lighter. Thank you. You can have a seat. Last week, I returned from traveling after thirty-four hours with luggage from India. Many of us carried two fifty-pound bags plus a carry-on. We brought food and medical supplies for our medical mission trip. If you travel a lot, you should pack as light as possible. Imagine carrying even one of the ..read more

Jesus's Response to a Dicey Test: Matthew 19:1-12 (Sermon)

INTRODUCTION  Thank you, worship team. Happy New Year! We are going back to our series in Matthew, picking up where we left off, preaching verse by verse, chapter by chapter. That has strengths and weaknesses. Overall, it has more strengths than weaknesses. I say that because preaching topically, we would likely avoid subjects like the one for the morning. In our text, the Pharisees test Jesus. They already conspired about how they might destroy him in Matthew chapter 12, verse 14. Today, the test is on a contentious topic: divorce. There may have been some earnest curiosity in their ..read more
