Hackney WickED

Hackney Wick, once home to silk factories, confectionery production and petroleum refining, is now a melting pot of London’s artist community, which was on show – inside and out – at Hackney WickED from 26-28 July. Hackney WickED is a once a year, three-day open studio and exhibition event, which showcases the work of resident artists and gives the public a behind the scenes look into the vast studio spaces dotted throughout the Hackney Wick and Fish Island districts. Programme in hand, I wandered from studio to studio, chatting with artists about their work and the evolution of the hub over t ..read more

Cut Copy Summer Series

Following my recent visit to Somerset House, which you can read about here, I recently returned to see Cut Copy as part of the Summer Series. One of the things about London events is that they go on, come rain or shine. Brollies up and wellies on, we bopped along to the dance beats with a loss of inhibition that comes with a surrender to the elements. Cut Copy’s set was a mix of old a new tunes, artistic visuals and spectacular lighting. Featuring tracks like Heart on Fire and Lights and Music, we were transported back to days on sweaty dancefloors in grubby clubs. You can check out upcoming S ..read more

Somerset House and Get Up, Stand Up Now
London Imposters

It’s days like today that remind me, London is everything. Whilst gazing out across London’s glories from the upper deck of one of the capital’s iconic red buses, I completely missed my stop at Tate Modern. Turning my first corner at my new local, I found myself at the off-white stone arches of Somerset House. Opening up into a stone square with a playful water fountain in the centre and terrace style seating around, I was taken aback by my chance encounter with a European paradise. After wandering the halls and taking in the scene over a glass of Riesling from Fernandez & Wells, I was dra ..read more

Kew Botanic Gardens

I love that there are so many places just outside of London where you can feel like you’ve just walked into an Austen, Brontë or George Elliot novel. Kew Royal Botanic Gardens is one of these places. I started my day at Kew Botanic Gardens by walking through the Arboretum (woods). More beaten than formal, the paths throughout the grounds imitate the countryside, adding to the Austenesque illusion. It was a joy to lose myself in uninhabited parts of the grounds with not a soul in sight and only the beauty of surrounds to keep me company. Conservatories Following my leisurely walk, I made my way ..read more

Camden

The first thing I’ll tell you about Camden is go to the main strip, walk about 20 metres, take a look around, mind your purse and then beeline for the canal. Camden Lock On a lovely spring day, my companion and I made our way through the markets around Camden Lock, partaking in delicious street food from the MANY vendors that find their home here, and enjoyed a beer in one of the bars overlooking the canal below. It’s rather crowded on a Saturday afternoon so I suggest going either earlier or later in the day to nab yourself a nice perch at Lockside Camden, or alternatively, grab a snack and d ..read more

London backstreets

If you make your way out of London’s bustling Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus and Portobello Road, you’ll find yourself walking the hidden backstreets of the London that was and still is. In any new city, I often make my way out of the bright lights of the main strip and find myself in the more modest yet equally as virtuous backstreets. Some of my favourite areas in London are Dalston and Stoke Newington. Not yet completely gentrified, these areas still hold some classic old local spots nestled in amongst new trendy cafes. I always seem to find myself in these places – places on the cusp of ..read more

Walk through it’s doors and you’ll instantly be hit by fluorescent fantasticness. Everything glows and seems to move to the thumping electronic music being played by an in-house DJ on Saturdays.  Once your vision adjusts to the neon glow of the surrounds, you’ll wonder at the two dancers that welcome you from their balcony podiums into the entranceway of Cyberdog in Camden. Yes, you’ve walked into an alternate universe, come raver’s paradise, with every variation of 90s rave culture… and then some… Make your way down to the second level which features the DJ booth from where the sound is being ..read more

Jenny Holzer at Tate Modern

Jenny Holzer’s work takes many forms, only a few of which are featured in the Tate Modern Exhibit, running until 7 July 2019. Holzer uses text to engage the viewer, challenging them to search for the the meaning behind the words and phrases that make up her work. The mixing of messages through Holzer’s work are cliché and meaningful and, contradictory and simpatico. It’s this flow and clash that give pause to the deeper meaning or – to question whether there is in fact a deeper meaning to be found. If you get the opportunity to visit the the Jenny Holzer exhibit, take a break from the immersio ..read more

Giacomo the Italian

In a place where friends are meant to be hard to come by, I’ve made one already – Giacomo. Giacomo the Florentine flew in to London on the same day as me. Good humoured and happy to let me practice my Italian, we have become fast friends. With intentions of taking me for a walk through some of London’s beautiful streets we instead met at a fairly drab part of town which was chosen for it’s centrality for the both of us. With a little chuckle about the dodgy, dimly lit, leading towards ideal abduction rendezvous, we set off for greener pastures. Here is the thing about making friends in a new c ..read more
