One of the bigger trends in telecoms has been the evolution of cloud computing and how software operating in the cloud is being used by carriers to build out and manage their networks — moves disrupting traditional business models based around the purchasing and deployment of costly telecoms routers, switches and other costly physical equipment. Today, Mavenir — one of the hopefuls in that space, with a focus on Open Radio Access Networks and related services for 5G networks — is announcing $100 million in funding to expand its technology and its customer base. The first of those will involve ..read more

India just started rolling out 5G networks after much anticipation and years-long delay. Service operators expect to bring next-generation cellular connectivity to every town in the world’s second-largest wireless market by as early as the end of 2023. But while the rollout is currently at its initial phase, New Delhi last week directed telecom operators to not set up 5G infrastructure around areas close to airports to avoid interference with flight operations. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the government body that handles telecom operations in the South Asian nation, in its rece ..read more

Apple, Google and Samsung to soon release 5G support software updates in India
TechCrunch » 5G
by Ivan Mehta

Apple, Google and Samsung said Wednesday they will roll out software updates to enable 5G support on their respective handsets in India, the world’s second-largest wireless market, just days after local bureaucrats began pushing the phonemakers to expedite their efforts. Reliance Jio and Airtel, India’s two largest carriers, have started to offer 5G services in select Indian cities in recent weeks, but many popular handsets in the nation currently don’t support the local airwaves. These smartphones have hardware capabilities for 5G, but manufacturers need to work with local network carriers to ..read more

India’s government is set to push handset makers including Apple and Samsung to expedite software upgrades on their phones to make them compatible with local 5G airwaves in the country — just days after kicking off the next-generation cellular network by the nation’s two leading telcos with all pomp and show. Top bureaucrats from the country’s telecom and IT departments will jointly chair a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the software upgrade requirements for enabling 5G on compatible phones. The primary agenda of the closed-door meeting is to push smartphone companies to prioritize software u ..read more

Another major piece of mobile M&A appears to be in the works in the UK. Today, Vodafone confirmed that it was in merger discussions with Three UK, a carrier owned by CK Hutchison, to accelerate their 5G rollout. A deal would not involve any cash consideration, Vodafone said: “The envisaged transaction would involve both companies combining their UK businesses, with Vodafone owning 51% and our partner CK Hutchison owning 49% of the combined business,” it wrote in its official statement to the market published earlier today. The statement itself was made in response to press speculation arou ..read more

Ford is working on a mobile app designed to alert drivers to pedestrians and bicyclists nearby. The app, scheduled to debut at the Intelligent Transportation Society of America’s World Congress in Los Angeles this week, uses Bluetooth Low Energy to send a location alert from a pedestrian or cyclist’s smartphone to passing Ford vehicles equipped with the latest infotainment system. The system then calculates potential crash risks, providing screen and audio alerts. Ford said it will demonstrate the technology using T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced Network Solution, as well as research from Commsigni ..read more

Amazon launches AWS Private 5G so companies can build their own 4G mobile networks

Amazon’s cash-cow cloud division AWS has launched a new service designed to help companies deploy their own private 5G networks — eventually, at least. AWS first announced AWS Private 5G in early preview late last year, but it’s now officially available to AWS customers starting in its U.S. East (Ohio), U.S. East (N. Virginia), and U.S. West (Oregon) regions, with plans to roll it out internationally “in the near future.” But — and this is a big “but” — despite its name, AWS Private 5G currently only supports 4G LTE. “It supports 4G LTE today, and will support 5G in the future, both of which g ..read more

European Union keeps mobile roaming fees at bay for another decade
TechCrunch » 5G

Five years ago, the European Union passed rules which largely ended mobile roaming fees for citizens traveling with their devices across borders within the bloc. Today lawmakers are reupping the regulation that lets EU citizens “roam like at home” for a full decade, meaning European consumers can keep avoiding most extra fees when travelling within another of the 27 EU Member States (or the EEA) until at least 2032. The updated regulation also brings some new additions — including a focus on quality of service, with a requirement that consumers have access to the same services abroad in the EU ..read more

Most of the time no one has to think about how the mobile networks we all rely on work. But it won’t surprise many to hear that, as is often the case with infrastructure, some pieces are the latest tech and others haven’t changed in decades. Eridan is a well-funded startup aiming to replace one of the latter with fundamentally different hardware approach could make mobile networks an order of magnitude more efficient. Everywhere you look — or more likely, just above where you look — there are cell towers that connect your phone to the broader internet. You can think of these as being made up o ..read more
