What I learnt from listening to six podcasts on a Sunday long run

On Sunday 12th May I went for my weekly long run. Normally I’d mix up what I listen to between music, audiobooks, podcasts, or just the sounds around me. On this run though I decided to listen only to podcasts, and to take a selfie at the end of each episode…something to stop me thinking about the distance. Podcast 1 – Outside Podcast link Episode – Sweat Science: The Pull-Up Artists I ran from my house all the way to Moore before this episode finished, about 4 miles in total. I started my run with a hat, buff, and gloves (Alexa said there was a chance of showers), but as you can see from the ..read more

Deciding to be a better version of myself Obese, smoking, and drinking every day. This was what had become of me in my twenties. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed that decade of my life. It’s the decade I met and married my wife. We travelled (a little), went to parties, and did everything you’re meant to do in that period of your life. But, three days away from my 30th birthday and 4 months away from becoming I parent. I decided that it was time to make a change. So I did. How I quit social smoking I was never a massive smoker, I didn’t have a 20 a day habit like some ..read more

Week 17 : April 22nd – 28th Summary I decided to take a lighter week. I’ve been training hard, and found I wasn’t enjoying running as much as I like to. So I decided to shorten a few of my runs. This meant I fell slightly short of my usual 40+ mile weekly target, but it meant that I felt more mentally switched on so I’m not too bothered about dropping a few miles. Highlight My favourite run this week was my Saturday long run battling with Storm Hannah. Full transparency, I really wasn’t looking forward to starting my run, the rain was battering down, the wind was howling, and my family wer ..read more

Delamere circular (21 miles) On Saturday 20th April, I headed out for my scheduled 20 mile run. This week I decided on a route which followed the Delamere Way. Overview of the route I followed to complete my Runcorn-Delamere Circular What’s Delamere Way? The Delamere Way is a Long Distance Walking Route covering a total of 21 miles between Stockton Heath and Frodsham, Cheshire. Week 16 : April 15th-21st Summary A week of ups & downs, from feeling deflated mid-week after a disappointing run, to running 21 miles and hitting my weekly target of 42 miles. Overall, this week has been good training, especially the mental aspect, and when it comes down to a marathon it’s the Mental strength that gets you through the difficult miles. Highlight Two moments from this last week come to mind when I think about highlights. Thursdays run with Kylo and Louisa. It was the run after I had stopped two miles early and called Sarah to come and pick me up. Thursdays run, was mental ..read more

How I use AirTable to track my races

Tracking what races I have upcoming, ones I’m interersted in, and ones I’ve previously completed was taking up too much time. I was using separate apps for each of them (calendar, Days until, google sheets), and frankly it was a chore. So I explored a few different options on how I could improve my experiene, and reduce the effort required from me to keep it all up to date. I chose to use Airtable. What’s Airtable? Airtable is a free, online database platform. You can use it for allsorts of data capture. Check it out here. How I add new events to my tracker Initially I added information direc ..read more

The tech I use when running

I’m a bit of a techy. Here’s some of the things I’ll often take with me when I’m out for a run. Garmin Fenix 5 – every run I bought this watch last year as I started to think about running a marathon (or further), my previous watch (Polar M600) was great but the battery wouldn’t last long enough for what I needed it for. How I use it… It records my runs, including heat rate, elevation, VO2 Max, and route. I can load route on to the watch and have it provide navigation for me. If I get lost, I can use TracBack (reverse or direct route) to get me back to the start. When I’m not running I use it ..read more

Week 14: April 1st-7th Summary Big week, my largest weekly mileage ever with 42.4 miles and 2907ft elevation. There’s 7 weeks to go until Marathon Madness kicks off at Liverpool Rock n Roll, and it feels like my training is going well. Now it’s time to focus on maintaining the mileage above 40 per week in preparation. Highlight I achieved a personal goal this week by finally finding a route up to the top of Helsby Hill during my Friday 8 miler (which ended up being 10),and took in both Frodsham and Helsby hilltops. I found the route via my new subscription to Ordnance Survey, so it’s already ..read more
