THIS STORY IS FROM OUR ARCHIVES Val has a habit of enjoying a single glass of wine every evening on the patio at the back of his house, and Mylo always joins him. The two of them sit there together, surveying the world around them and enjoying each other’s company. VICIOUS ATTACK One evening , as they were enjoying the evening peace, two large Lurcher dogs strolled into the garden from an adjoining property. Mylo ran over towards them to see what was going on, and before Val could stop them, the two dogs attacked the little dog viciously. They pinned Mylo to the ground, with one of them biting ..read more

THIS STORY IS FROM OUR ARCHIVES Grace was playing with friends in a local park last week when she saw something surprising: the tiny head of a small bird sticking up out of the long grass. She went over to see what it was, and she found a large bewildered-looking baby bird. The bird didn’t fly away; in fact, he stayed rooted to the spot, as if his feet were stuck in the ground. His claws were clenched tightly shut, hanging on to the vegetation beneath him. Grace was worried about the little bird: there are a lot of cats in the neighbourhood, including pets and feral cats, and she had often see ..read more

Daisy the 7 year old Beagle became very unwell

THIS STORY IS FROM OUR ARCHIVES As a Beagle, Daisy is full of energy and curiosity. A few weeks ago, this nearly got her into life-threatening trouble in an unexpected way. Karl had brought some home-made modelling mixture (similar to Play-Doh) home with him after school. This had been made in the classroom using a mixture of flour, salt and water. A big dollop of the mix had been put into a plastic bag for Karl to play with at home, and he’d left it on the dressing table in his bedroom. DAISY ATE ALL THE MIXTURE Daisy must have smelt the food-like scent of the mixture: she loves her food. She ..read more

THIS STORY IS FROM OUR ARCHIVES When Lulu came in to see me this week for her annual health check, Jenny reminded me of the long and complex saga that she went through as a puppy. Jenny had bought Lulu from a dog breeder when she was just ten weeks of age, and she knew as soon as she brought the pup home that there was something seriously wrong with her.  The puppy was continually dribbling urine, and was soaking wet under her tail. She was able to squat and pass urine normally, but as well as that, there was constant, low grade leakage of urine. Her bed was soaked whenever she stood up a ..read more

THIS STORY IS FROM OUR ARCHIVES A few months ago, Chewie started to lose weight, and at the same time, he began to drink more water than usual. When this trend continued for more than just a few days, Shauna did her own research on the internet, and discovered that diabetes was a possible cause of his problem. When she brought Chewie to see me, a simple blood test was all that was needed to confirm the diagnosis. I measured his blood sugar (glucose): it was meant to be between 3 and 6, and it turned out to be over 30, nearly ten times the normal level. There was no need for any other tests: th ..read more

Molly is a good example of how well a new dog can work out in a young family. There’s evidence that dogs bring many benefits to children, including protecting them against some allergies and teaching them about body language, so that they grow up feeling more self confident and socially self-assured around humans, as well as around dogs. Of course, not all children can have dogs: they don’t suit every situation. But when it can be done, a dog provides a wonderful long term companion for a growing young person. THE NEW ARRIVAL When Nora was younger, she had been knocked down by a big, enthusias ..read more

When Gabby developed a large swelling on her cheek beneath her left eye, Mick brought her to see me. At first Mick had thought it might be something temporary like an insect bite, but it was a hard swelling, and it had grown bigger and bigger over the previous three days. A TRIP TO THE VET When I examined her, I knew at once what it was; the swelling, on the left side of her face, was in the classic place for a dental root abscess. When I lifted her upper lip and inspected her back left teeth, I could see that one of them was broken. Infection must have tracked in through the damaged tooth. Tr ..read more

Many pet owners now have their female dogs spayed when they are young: there’s good evidence that it prevents certain cancers as well as avoiding some other serious illnesses as dogs grow older. For a number of reasons, Daisy wasn’t spayed at the normal age of around a year old: she had an accidental pregnancy instead, and she needed a Caesarian operation because she couldn’t have the pups naturally. It was all very traumatic, and Elizabeth didn’t want to consider the idea of putting her through another operation to spay her. She’s such a small dog that it seemed like a big procedure to put he ..read more

THIS STORY IS FROM OUR ARCHIVES Two years ago, the family decided that it was time to get their first dog: the girls were ten years old, ready to help with the responsibility of a family pet. The girls wanted to get a pug puppy, but their Mum, Sylvaine, had heard that pugs had a higher number of health issues than a cross-bred dog. As well as this, she knew that Ireland’s animal rescue groups were overflowing with abandoned dogs, so she felt that they had a responsibility to offer a home to an unwanted animal if possible. They contacted Dogs Trust, and discovered that there was a wide range of ..read more
