We are already in the third month of 2024, and even with that bonus Leap Year day, it seems like the year is flying by. Just checking in...how are you doing with those yearly plans?  Do you find yourself setting goals and creating plans, only to lose track of them by now? Or you might be frustrated because you didn't achieve your goals from last year and are worried about this year.  The problem is, long-term planning isn't all that effective. Our brains really weren't meant to think long-term, so if yours isn't, you are not alone.  Of course it is ok to have annual goals, but w ..read more

The most popular way to share content online is through short-form video. From TikToks, to stories and reels, we are sharing, receiving and learning in small bite-sized lessons. Yet most learning in our field is workshops and webinars. Some webinars or workshops have a lot of information, take up to an hour, and may give you two or three nuggets of wisdom. (Except mine! Mine are wall-to-wall awesome! ?) What if those best nuggets of wisdom were packaged into bite-sized and actionable clips! It would save you time and you could apply the lesson faster. Condensed and curated information tailored ..read more

There are more than 2 million Donor Advised Funds holding more than $230 billion, yes billion, in funds waiting to be dispersed to nonprofits like yours. A Donor Advised Fund is like a charitable investment account for the sole purpose of supporting nonprofits. DAFs are the fastest-growing giving vehicle because they're one of the easiest and most tax-advantageous ways to give to charity. Yet, from the nonprofit side, they can be challenging. A big challenge is that gifts from donor-advised funds don’t come through traditional marketing channels like direct mail or email. The donation comes fr ..read more

Thriving In The Attention Economy

When I was writing my book, I asked my book writing coach how much of my expertise I should share with my readers. Should I share some of what I know? All of it? If I shared all of it, then what would people hire me for? "Tell them everything," she said. Here's why. Information is free and readily available. We have, at our fingertips, all the information we could ever imagine. Information is no longer at a premium. What is at a premium? Attention. Clients hire me because of the attention, support, and guidance. I am happy to share all I know because it is still not me. Same goes for your ..read more

Moving Beyond Polarity For Better Solutions

I was working with a board on some fundraising training and some were taking to it more than others. The ED was a bit frustrated by the ones who weren't taking to it. She asked if instead we use the rest of the time on training staff instead of the board. We got on a call and talked it through. Her thinking was BOARD or STAFF. One or the other. And that is typical of POLARITY thinking which is super common in our culture. Black or white, left or right, mean or nice, love or hate. Thinking in polarities keeps us stuck in a win/lose perspective. Moving beyond polarities into what I call The Infl ..read more

Last week. I introduced you to the fabulous Becky Endicott and creating not just donors but believers. (If you haven't checked out that episode, you can find it here) The conversation gets better this week, as we talk more about relationship builders to connect with believers! What makes fundraising feel icky is when we put the money before the relationship. It feels a bit disingenuous. But you may feel the pressure to raise money and think that relationship building is wasting time. Becky talks about measuring more then dollars raised and instead looking at relationship equity.  We ..read more

I have been helping nonprofits build effective websites since, well, before there we websites! The first thing I know for sure is the website is the foundation of your communication. Your communication drives people to the site, your content keeps them coming back. (If you want to learn a super easy system for creating consistent content, check out this episode.) The second thing I know for sure is that websites are not static, they constantly need updating, refining and of course, new content. Your goal is to get people off social media and on to your website! But how do you do that, or do it ..read more

Merriam-Webster declared "authentic" as word of the year for 2023 and I am here for it! There's so much B.S., posing and filtering in the world! People crave and are attracted to authenticity. The more authentic you are, the more BELIEVERS you attract. Believers give more than money. They give social capital, stories, lived experiences, time, expertise and connections.  In this week's The Influential Nonprofit, I talk with Becky Endicott, CFRE Endicott. Becky is a master storyteller and marketer. She co-founded We Are For Good, a new media company gathering nonprofit allies and ..read more

Why or Why Not Start a Nonprofit

Sometimes, when I am working with smaller organizations and they are comparing themselves to bigger ones, I say, "Every nonprofit starts around a kitchen table by a person who was mad enough to make a change." I have been a part of those organizations...I remember sitting in a living room of a fellow board member when I was on Stray Rescue of St. Louis' board in 1998 and we had $400 in the bank and $600 in vet bills. They are now (as of 2021 filings) a $4.9 million organization. Starting a nonprofit is not for the faint of heart AND it can be done. If you are feeling called to start one, or up ..read more
