I am in my early 20's and reside in the most isolated city in the world, Perth, Australia. I was diagnosed with a bilateral, profoundly hearing loss at 14 months old. There was no history of deafness in our family. While other parents focused on helping their kids to walk and talk, my mum and dad had to think about an issue that many parents never even contemplate. A story from the Medical News Bulletin about research which helps to deal with the apprehension faced when kids have Cochlear Implants.Editor commentThis is a fascinating read. Language development studies in D/deaf children twenty years ago didn’t have detailed findings related to Cochlear Implant kids. It’s heartening to discover that early cochlear implantation can result in rapid auditory development and exclusive oral communication. There are limitations in the study which are identified in the article. Also, the article suggests that language development in D/deaf children is not possibl ..read more

A story from New Zealand Stuff Magazine about a campaign to increase Cochlear Implant funding: nearly 200 New Zealanders currently meet Ministry of Health criteria for Cochlear Implant surgery. However, waiting lists are overburdened due to inadequate funding.Editor commentAdults in New Zealand sometimes have to wait up to four years for a Cochlear Implant unless they pay 50,000 (New Zealand Dollars) which is the equivalent to 33,000 (USD) to jump the queues. This story struck a chord with us as it's clear that change is needed. The number of people eligible for the funded procedure each year ..read more
