Monastery Candy Christmas Treat: Gift-giving with a higher purpose
Aging With Freedom

We try to add a local flavor to our gifts. For Christmas, we found a local abbey in very Catholic Dubuque where the nuns make and sell caramels and chocolates. Aptly named, Monastery Candy. The sales support the Cistercian Trappist nuns’ contemplative lifestyle in the Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey. We ordered a case of twelve for pick-up at the Abbey. Figuring a trip over would be a day adventure and not much different in cost than shipping. And we’d be ready to share our Monastery Candy Christmas treat with friends and family. The object of our day adventure to Our Lady of the Mississippi ..read more

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. For the Fallen By Laurence Binyon 11th Hour 11th Day 11th Month: At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.  They shall not grow old. Remembering all who served freedom. Balance like a dancer with strength and flexibility
Aging With Freedom

Strength. Flexibility. Balance. The movement triple play. And the greatest of these is? When we’re young it’s all about strength. How much can you lift? How fast can you go? Then maintaining flexibility comes more to the fore to hold the aches and pains at bay. But the loss of which of the three takes you down? And fast? Losing your balance. As we age, balance issues threaten hip fractures and constrain mobility. Elder survival rates after a hip fracture are scary poor. All three movement elements are necessary and none alone are sufficient. But we have well-developed advocates and routines fo ..read more

Understanding your customer’s why What emotion drives your customer to buy? Whether it’s music, boats, technology, or senior living? Each buyer resonates with a particular emotional appeal. The music example first. My rural roots keep resurfacing in my favorite songs. One of the essential entrepreneurial skills is pattern-recognition. So, I’m fascinated by recurring themes in the economy, in a business, or in my own life. There’s almost always a lesson in a pattern if you can extend the general rule to the next specific case. Or to the analog. Songs are pre-packaged emotions. The surest mood-a ..read more

The Ranch Stillwater OK (Oklahoma) is a cautionary tale for consumers considering buying into a retirement community still in development. Or under construction.
