Too many men are living in quiet desperation. You can hear it in moments of honest self-reflection. For example, men say, “I feel like I have lost track of what really matters,” or, “I work hard all day long, but I don’t know if it makes a difference.”  You want to fall asleep at night knowing that your life is making a difference. You want to be excited about your future, not fearful. You hate laboring on priorities that are not your own. You do not waste time but you could use some help to discern between what is good and what is best. You want a system to help you navigate your life ..read more

Dear Friends, It has been a long time since I posted. Sorry for the radio silence. I appreciate your patience and special thanks to those who have reached out through this site, or on social media. The next Life Compass Workshop Retreat is happening on Saturday November 25th at Saint Patrick’s in Maple Ridge, BC. My good friend, Jake Khym, recently had this to say: The Life Compass is a great tool designed for Catholic men to help eradicate passivity in their life and live intentionally as an icon of God the Father. I believe this is a wonderful investment of your time and money as you seek ..read more

Leadership Problems with Feedback
Brett Powell

I am sure you have heard it said, “Feedback is the breakfast of champions,” right? Every Leader has an important responsibility to provide quality feedback to those they lead. Not just when it comes time to deliver the annual performance review. Feedback should be a regular part of your meetings with staff. However, the biggest problem with feedback, for most leaders at the top of the organization, is not poor practices when delivering feedback, no, the biggest problem is that leaders do not ask for feedback themselves and miss opportunities to improve. The biggest problem with leaders and fe ..read more

Simple Solutions Will Not Work for the Church Today

I have been thinking a lot about the place for paradox in the Church these days. By definition, a paradox is a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated may prove to be well-founded and true. Christians today, especially those highly engaged and leaning toward an ideology, tend to pit concepts and ideas against each other when those concepts and ideas exist in tension. To simplify the solution, we create an “either/or” paradigm to mitigate the tension between what we think are opposing forces. Christians today, especially those highly engaged, tend ..read more

The Importance of Noticing in Leadership
Brett Powell

Workhorses often wear blinders, small shields positioned near the eye to eliminate peripheral vision. Blinders are a prescribed blindness limiting the horse to only see straight ahead, which in turn makes it more productive and efficient in carrying out its duties. Every leader knows how important it is to eliminate distractions. Visionary leaders cut through the clutter and concentrate on what matters most. However, focusing too intently on one thing can blind a leader to important opportunities emerging, critical problems surfacing, or key relationships faltering. Failing to notice when key ..read more

As Christendom Falls the Domestic Church Must Rise

This is an updated article from November 2021 and the next in the series on the book, From Christendom to Apostolic Mission. “In a Christendom culture, the type of person who is brought forward to lead the Church is often the conflict-avoiding administrator rather than the apostle. The Church goes from being a movement of spirit incarnated in institutions to a set of sclerotic institutions that have lost their inner spirit” (From Christendom to Apostolic Mission). The quote above offers a penetrating analysis of some Catholic institutions and the fate of those institutions if led by “confli ..read more

It is time to go on mission again!

This is the next article in the series on the book, From Christendom to Apostolic Mission. This week’s post is contributed by Matt Regitz who is a leadership coach with Divine Renovation Network. I grew up in a neighborhood Catholic Church on the edge of the Bible Belt. From all external signs, Christendom was hardly dead; it seemed alive to my young eyes.  Fast forward to 30 years later and this particular parish became an area-wide suburban mega-parish with 10,000 registered families. Now, Christianity may have lost a few pounds and the Bible Belt has tightened up, however, some parish ..read more

Christendom Was a Beautiful Imaginative Vision for Society, But No More

The recently published book From Christendom to Apostolic Mission could have been subtitled A Tale of Two Modes as it proposes shifting the Church into a new mode of mission, acknowledging that, “Christendom no longer exists” (Pope Francis). The actual subtitle, Pastoral Strategies for an Apostolic Age, illustrates why the book should be required reading for all those working in the Church today. It is that good and important. This is the next post in a series of articles on the book.  The authors begin by helping us first understand the place of a ruli ..read more
