Wildfire smoke is a form of air pollution. We’ve known for some time that wildfire smoke can cause lung and heart problems as well as scratchy eyes. Did you wonder how wildfire smoke affects your skin though? Because of the increase in the number and severity of wildfires in the Western US, many science groups are now studying the effects of wildfire smoke more seriously.  A new study looked at patient visits to dermatologists in 2018 near the California Camp Fire.  They found not only an increase in overall dermatology visits over previous years when there was no fire, but there ..read more

Types of Lavender There are two main types of lavender that are grown in home gardens in the US (and farms); Lavandula angustifolia which is often called English lavender and Lavandula x intermedia, often called French lavender. Be careful at the big box stores because they often sell Lavandula stoechas which is not a cold hardy species. It is important to use these Latin or binomial names to make sure we a ..read more

In Celebration of St. Patricks Day this week I wanted to write about Irish or Celtic Herbs. Herbs have been used in all cultures for food, medicine and ritual probably since the beginning of time. Each culture or civilization of course having their own favorites. These favorites would initially be based on native herbs that grow, but expand into others as invaders move into the area bringing in their own plants. Much of ancient Irish traditional medicine focused on magic and religious tradition based in animism, while plant medicine brought a medicine more rooted in science. Surrounded by ocea ..read more

What is Holistic Skin Care At Colorado Aromatics, we promote holistic skin care and have been working with local esthetic schools to teach holistic skin care. But it is not just for in the spa, you can practice holistic skin care at home.  The term holistic comes from the Greek word “holos”, meaning whole. Because of this, some people will spell it ‘Wholistic’.  A holistic approach means that care of the skin care is not separated from the rest of the body. It simply means looking at and treating something as part of a whole. Because of this it can be much more effective for the user ..read more

Four Thieves / Fire Cider Both Four Thieves Blend and Fire Cider are traditionally used by herbalists for winter health. Both recipes allow for variations and I like to make some version of these in the fall. You don’t have to use a recipe, but use what you have. Because they are both similar, I combine the two. Fire Cider typically relies more on spices like garlic, onion and hot pepper, where Four Thieves relies more heavily on herbs. By combining the two, I think it gives a more potent and palatable blend. Fire Cider Story The name Fire Cider became popularized in the 1980’s after well know ..read more
