There’s a lot of abortion legislation out there—understandably so. The Policy team at the American Humanist Association (AHA) makes sure we’re on top of supporting legislation that furthers the strength of abortion protections in the United States, so that EVERYONE can access and receive the care they need. That’s why today, we ask that you urge your Representative to cosponsor and support the Abortion Justice Act.
The right to abortion, and reproductive freedom generally, must be strongly safeguarded from all infringement in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health ..read more

This week, millions of people around the world, particularly in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and across ethnic groups in Western, Central, and South Asia, will celebrate Norooz or the Persian New Year!
The word “Norooz” translates literally to “new day” in Farsi, and the holiday marks both the beginning of spring and the start of the new year in the Solar Hijri calendar, a calendar based on earth’s movements around the sun. Norooz corresponds with and is celebrated at the exact moment of the vernal or spring equinox. It is celebrated with music, dancing, an abundance of sweets and food, an ..read more

Bills allowing chaplains in public schools, like the one described in this article, have now been proposed in at least thirteen states across the country.
Florida is the most recent of several states which have passed legislation allowing for chaplains in public schools to replace licensed counselors. Proponents have touted it as an opportunity to approach the challenges children are facing with new tools to support overwhelmed teachers and counselors. Detractors point to the disintegration of the wall between church and state and of the concealed motives of religious groups to discriminate ag ..read more

We’re on the brink of one of the most consequential elections in recent memory. The separation of church and state is a cornerstone of the United States, ensuring the preservation of democracy and the protection of civil liberties. However, in recent years, a growing ideology has threatened this foundational principle: Christian nationalism. With each passing day, the discourse surrounding Christian nationalism gains momentum, prompting a crucial question: What lies at the heart of Christian nationalism, and why should humanists sound the alarm?
Christian nationalism, separate from the Christi ..read more

March is an important month in education. In two different ways, March highlights the critical importance of art in schools: firstly, it has been heralded as Youth Art Month since 1969, and the National Association for Music Education marks March as Music In Our Schools Month.
In 1961, the Crayon, Water Color & Craft Institute celebrated the first Children’s Art Month. In 1969, the month was renamed Youth Art Month to include secondary school students. The history of Music In Our Schools Month began in New York in 1973 when the New York State School Music Association sponsored a Music In O ..read more

I’m inspired by New York Times‘ investigative reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohy. Their 2017 piece exposed Harvey Weinstein’s history of abuse and sexual misconduct against women, and was documented in their book She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement (2019), which was turned into the movie She Said (2022). They were vital in expanding the #MeToo movement (initially started by the American activist Tarana Burke) and helping victims speak out and be heard.
