I'm looking for fun material choices to make a skateboard deck. I have never made a deck before, and I am also pretty new to material processing, but I am looking for a material science/engineering related project.
Requirements:
Must be something I can process in a public workshop or a garage
Must be easy enough to work with that I could make a skateboard deck out of it
Somewhat impact resistant
Flexible and strong enough to hold about 160 pounds (about 175 with a backpack)
Somewhat Water resistant (I live in a rainy area)
Anisotropic flat sheets may be good since they would mimic the wood ..read more

I've been told to anneal SiC samples to check if they can act as single photon emission sources. But, I don't clearly understand how anneal affects this phenomenon? Can someone explain? Thank you!

im doing a research on shape memory materials.
i was wondering if there is a silicone (after curing) will retain its new while experiencing a load.
once the load is removed - it will go back to its new shape eventually.
so its not a permanent deformation - its temporary and will not mechanically fight back when under tension.
i have been trying to look for research papers that has this property but i cant seem to find any
if anyone came across a similar material do let me know :D

Hi y'all! I'm preparing for a job interview next week for a company focused on polymers. My experience lies more in ceramics, and it's been a while since school. Any advice on resources I could use for review, like a textbook recommendation?

I am a newbie using VASP, currently I am trying to calculate the formation energy per atom and pre bandgap using dft with VSAP.
I wrote script for calculating the bandgap
from import read from ase.calculators.vasp import Vasp from ase.optimize import BFGS import numpy as np import os os.environ['VASP_PP_PATH'] = '/scratch' # Load the structure from a CIF file structure = read('mp-1218989.cif') # Set up VASP calculator for relaxation calc_relax = Vasp(xc='PBE', # Exchange-correlation functional encut=400, # Plane-wave cutoff kpts=(3, 3, 3), # k-point grid for relaxation ibrion=2, # Ion relaxa ..read more

Hi, I am a beginner in the composite field, and I don´t understand what this laminate code means, specially the low bar in the code. Thanks in advance!

My main three interests are civil or material engineering and applied statistics
I love applied stats, but I also love engineering. I am apart of a waste water research group and honestly is is so much fun. I work on data analysis for the group I actually have friends only because of that. So it means alot to me.
I KNOW I want to go to get a phD and go to grad school because I love research.
I love lab work and getting my hands dirty and that is something I will miss if I go into statistics.
As a whole, Applied statistician seem to be more in an advising or consulting role. I talked to a bios ..read more

A while ago I made a post about attempting to source spare parts for an old drop weight impact testing machine and was unsuccessful in my searches and have sense pivoted to attempting to rig the machine with custom components that meet the same requirements. The main issue I’m having is finding the proper shock absorbers to slow down the drop weight. I need to run 2 and they’ll be in parallel with and the specs I’m working with are a maximum velocity of 44 ft/sec (13.41 m/sec), a maximum energy of 326.5 ft-lb (442.7 Joules), and ideally a stroke in the 1 inch range but I’m not entirely certai ..read more
