By Bruce Claflin, Scuttlebutt Magazine According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, boat thefts are on the decline. Their statistics indicate that boat thefts in the U.S. declined by 8% from 2017 – 2018. This reduction in thefts of watercraft is certainly very welcome news to boaters, but not a signal that boaters can relax in their vigilance to protect themselves against becoming victims of this crime. With the St. Croix River near Stillwater finally dropping for the first time this spring below the level where slow no-wake speeds are required, many people might be eager to throttle up and make some waves. ST. PAUL, MN – In response to increasing levels of chloride found in area waters, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has been seeking feedback on their plan to reduce the amount of road salt in use every year on Minnesota roads in winter. Chloride levels in some metro area lakes and rivers are already close to reaching toxic levels for aquatic life, further heightening concerns. While sodium chloride has long been deemed the most cost effective way of keeping our roads ice free in winter, there are other hidden costs that are presenting themselves upon closer inspection. ST. PAUL, MN – On June 13th, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued an advisory regarding ‘Wake responsibility” and requesting compliance and awareness of existing statutes. It is already against the law in Minnesota to operate a watercraft so that its wake endangers, harasses or interferes with any person or property. The DNR wants to remind boaters that our waters are a multi-use recreational resource with a responsibility that is shared amongst its users. Operators of vessels that are capable of producing a large wake are reminded to always be aware and use caution when produc ..read more
