CW: discussion of sexual assault Sarah: I’ve seen Birds of Prey twice in the last few weeks. The second time was me saying “This is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen, and I’ve got to get everyone else I know to see it too.” My friend Megan was standing in the line of fire, so she got dragged to the theater. And it turns out she loves it too! We both have a lot of thoughts about Birds of Prey, feminism, and the conversation (mostly from male critics) that’s surrounded the movie. So I asked Megan if she would be interested in joining me today in laying out our thoughts on Birds of Prey. F ..read more

Cover Reveal: Ghosts in Quicksilver by Elliott Dunstan

Elliott Dunstan’s short story in Scourge of the Seas of Time (and Space) was one of my favorite of the collection, and I’m happy to reveal the cover for his newest project, Ghosts in Quicksilver! Mrs. Chaudhury walked up the narrow steps into my office at six in the afternoon, and the ghost of her dead husband followed behind… Jamal Kaye is not what you would call ‘destined for success’. She’s a struggling teenager with a stubborn smoking habit (gross), a Facebook page for a private detective firm (employees: one) and an annoying ability to commune with the dead. But soon, she’s stuck with he ..read more

Guest Post: “Alpennia: The Evolution of a Series” by Heather Rose Jones

I never meant to write an epic fantasy series. At first, I tried to convince myself I wasn’t even writing a novel. My novel writing had hit some brick walls: I tended to write all the “good parts” and then lose momentum. When I had the inspiration that became Daughter of Mystery, I told myself that I only wanted to experiment with a different writing process. A new approach and method. I wasn’t writing a novel,. Not really. Not yet. I was perfectly aware that I was lying to myself, but it was a necessary lie. I had some characters and a setting and a deep-seated fear that they’d get lost along ..read more

Where’s All the Adult Fantasy by Women?
The Illustrated Page | Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Reviews

I hear this question a lot. Only, it’s not usually phrased as a question. More often, it’s a phrased as a statement of fact: “There are no adult fantasy books by women!” Every time I hear it, I swear that flames start shooting out my eyes. Because, really? When men say this, they don’t always bother to add the qualifier “adult.” Sometimes there’s an implicit dismissal of young adult literature there, as if anything aimed at a teenage audience is therefore lesser… and hence the women writing it don’t count as “real” fantasy authors. Of course, woman who do write adult fantasy novels tend to hav ..read more

Favorite Reads of June and July 2019

So I’ve basically quit reviewing because giving my full and honest critical opinions on books might not be the best thing to do while applying to publishing jobs… but hey, I can still talk positively about books I loved right? With that in mind here are some “not reviews” for books I read over June and July (I’ll do some other posts for other months). I’d recommend all of these and don’t have any disclaimers. As such, I will be tagging this and all similar posts going forward “Recommended Reads.” The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley I’m a big Kameron Hurley fan, so obviously I was going to rea ..read more

Review of Ship of Smoke and Steel by Django Wexler

Ship of Smoke and Steel by Django Wexler. ★★★★ I keep thinking of this book as “queer Hunger Games.” I don’t know precisely why — maybe because it has some of the same tone and tropes as the Hunger Games but actually has queer people? Anyway, here’s the official synopsis: In the lower wards of Kahnzoka, the great port city of the Blessed Empire, eighteen-year-old ward boss Isoka comes to collect when there’s money owing. When her ability to access the Well of Combat is discovered by the Empire—an ability she should have declared and placed at His Imperial Majesty’s service—she’s sent on an imp ..read more
