Two shoe salesmen board a ship to a far away island looking to develop new business. Once they dock, they hurry onto the island knowing the other is competing for the same business. Immediately they look at the islanders and both call their home offices. The first guy said “OMG no one on the island wears shoes. They are all barefoot. There is no business potential here.” The other calls excitedly, and in fact, his boss tells him to slow down and take a deep breath. “OMG no one on the island wears shoes. They are all barefoot. There is business potential here.” It’s all about perspective isn’t ..read more

We were recently looking to purchase some furniture and part of the discerning process was to say “if wasn’t still available for purchase a week later it must not have been meant to be”. If I really believe that God didn’t give it, then I must not need it; conversely, I must believe the opposite is true too– that if He gave me something, I must need to use it. Elisha said, “Get a bow and some arrows,” and he did so. “Take the bow in your hands,” he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands. “Open the east window,” he said, and he opened it. “Sho ..read more

It may feel like you are sitting right now but actually Planet Earth is moving around the sun at 67,000 mph making a full revolution every 24 hrs. So the next time you feel like you’ve had an unproductive day, remind yourself that you traveled more than 1.5M miles in space today! “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” — Ps 37:23 God is a God of order. His plan for mankind has order. Therefore I believe my life has order. But when I feel stuck in a role or in a position beneath me, I question God because I can’t see how this is contributing toward ..read more

The Manna Stopped

A wild animal that is domesticated gets use to food given that he loses his instinct to hunt. If the handout isn’t present he will starve. Strange but really we are not that different as we get so use to money coming in that we take it for granted. When it stops, we think God is against us, but is He really? “The manna stopped the day after they ate the food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.” — Joshua 5:12 God promised provision to the Israelites when departing Egypt providing food in the form of manna day after day f ..read more

“If I ran the zoo,” said a young Gerald McGrew, “I’d make a few changes, that’s just what I’d do…..” The lions & tigers and that kind of stuff, They have up here now are not quite good enough. You see things like these in just any old zoo. They’re awfully old-fashioned. I want something new!  — Dr Seuss If I ran the Zoo book. So true Gerald McGrew so true. Have you ever stopped to ponder the implications of the word “If” in your life? Recently, I have stopped to think about the power of this one little word that shows up daily in my life and in different places in the bible. Did you know t ..read more

Albert Einstein did not speak until he was 4-years-old and did not read until he was 7. His parents thought he was “sub-normal,” and one of his teachers described him as “mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams.” He was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. He did eventually learn to speak, read, and even do a little math but first he had to overcome the lies that he was told. “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”  — Judges 6:15 D ..read more

Living in Japan I learned quickly that communication goes beyond the words spoken.  After giving a sponsorship presentation, I asked my team if they had any questions. No one raised their hand, so I assumed they understood. However, I learned afterwards that a couple of people had very important questions to ask but I missed it. I soon learned that in Japan, they don’t make as much direct eye contact as we do in the States so when I asked the group if there were any questions, I shouldn’t have looked for raised hands but how bright their eyes were. I eventually learned the phrase “kankaku de k ..read more

Sarbanes-Oxley, or SOX, is a federal law aiming at public accounting firms who participate in audits passed in response to the 2001 Enron scandal.  A staff of executives used accounting loopholes and poor financial reporting to hide billions of dollars in debt from failed deals and pressured it’s outside accounting firm  to ignore the issues. As a result, top executives earned billions while Enron employees and shareholders lost their pensions and stock options when they declared bankruptcy.  Leadership knew it was doing wrong yet looked the other way for personal gain. The governor asked, “Wh ..read more

Outside the Gate

The term gatekeeper, in a business-sense, is someone who serves to guard or block the flow of information or one whom controls access to someone or something. If you have ever tried to make an appointment with a senior executive or business owner, they often have a gatekeeper to serve as a filter for them to protect their time. It’s no fun being on the outside because we think we lack the ability to advance our situation so we strive to become insiders. “Elisha said, “Listen! God’s word! The famine’s over. This time tomorrow food will be plentiful—a handful of meal for a shekel; two handfuls o ..read more
