Botswana Butchery Canberra

Hailing from New Zealand, with restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne, Botswana Butchery has opened in Canberra (which I later find out was with a little nudge from our ACT Chief Minister). My friend and I try it out for lunch as part of birthday week. Pull on the chopping knife handles of the restaurant door (they must mean business!) and the interior is plush and spacious with large comfy chairs, hues of tan and teal, and a few little hidden spaces and intimate dining rooms. The lunch a la carte menu is split into raw bar items with a caviar service, charcuterie, entrees and light mains, the b ..read more

Chop Chop

Note: I was invited to dine in, however all opinions are my own. We headed to Japanese fusion restaurant Chop Chop in Civic for a quick weekday lunch and seriously enjoyed all the dishes. We start with the prawn rice toast. But this isn’t your traditional prawn toast – think creamy prawn salad with cucumber, celery and mayo on a deliciously thick rice base. I can’t quite describe the base, but it’s like a very condensed sticky rice turned into toast in bite sized pieces. I could easily polish off all 6 pieces in the serve! Definitely give this one a go. Next, we try the hiramasa kingfish sash ..read more

Nick O’Leary’s Heywood

For our wedding anniversary, we drive out to Nick O’Leary’s restaurant Heywood at Wallaroo (near Hall) after booking an outdoor undercover table. We decide to order multiple small plates to share, with one main and side, skipping the entire charcuterie section of the menu. There are a few mocktails on the menu and I’m happy to try two of them over the course of our lunch. The whipped chicken liver parfait on brioche toast with rhubarb ($8 each) are delicious little morsels. The tartness of the rhubarb helps cut through the richness of the parfait. You can’t go wrong with a good smoked chorizo ..read more

My 10 Favourite Eats of 2023

As 2023 is coming to an end, I’m going through my Top 10 favourite eats of the year. In no particular order: Louis So highly impressed with the offerings at European bistro Louis in Barton, I’ve actually been back two more times. The chicken liver parfait, capsicum panisse, calamari with grapefruit salad, chicken ballotine, and trifle with mandarin and white chocolate are amazing. Louis also offers a 2 or 3 course set menu lunch which I’ve taken advantage of. I’ve never been disappointed here, they are happy to do up a mocktail, and it’s just lovely sitting in the outdoor courtyard. View thi ..read more

Breakfast @ Pizza Artigiana

My favourite pizza spot Pizza Artigiana at the Jamison shops are now open for breakfast. The team uses Italian coffee brand Illy – interesting fact, all Illy coffee is sealed in a patented can where it’s air-free, so when you open it, it’s as fresh as it was when first packed! The dish that catches my eye is the Carbonara Eggs Benedict ($25) which comes with poached eggs, coated in carbonara sauce, a choice of mortadella or Italian ham, and topped with parmesan. It really does taste like carbonara sauce topped onto my eggs. The parmesan is a little pungent and strong, but I don’t mind it. Th ..read more

Muttonbird (Wanaka, New Zealand)

We had a mini-holiday over in New Zealand, and mainly stayed in Wanaka (south island). I wasn’t expecting it to be such a foodie destination, but even in the tiny town of Wanaka, there are some really great food options. I book into Muttonbird a few weeks in advance. On the night, our table of six are seated and provided with the drinks menu. There is only one mocktail on the menu and they can’t seem to make anything else which is odd. Luckily I am in love with the mocktail, so much so that I order it a second time with my main. We all partake in the Muttonbird Mix (NZ $77 per person) and I’m ..read more

Peonee

On a day off, I venture towards Campbell to try out Peonee. It’s a small intimate restaurant and I am interested in trying the 3-course lunch ($77 pp). There is an alcohol-free section of the drinks menu with house made kombucha, Lyre’s, Heaps Normal, Strange Love, and Non. I’ve noticed that this is happening more and more in some restaurants and love it! Lunch is a set menu (no choice of options except for dessert). Course 1 – scallops, daikon, nashi pear and Geraldton wax. A very delicate and fresh dish with diced scallops (like a ceviche) in a vinegary yet sweet cold broth topped with finge ..read more

Such and Such

I sneaked away from work on two occasions to head to lunch at Such and Such by the Canberra Theatre – it was quick solo dining. I’m really happy to see a ‘Not Alcohol’ menu. On the two occasions, I try the Such and Such Shandy with peach, earl grey, lime and Heaps Normal XPA, and another citrus mocktail. I like that they are both decently priced at $8-10. I order the flat bread with toum ($6 each). Toum is a Lebanese garlic aioli type sauce that’s pasted over the flat bread and sprinkled with salt. It is AMAZING. I love bread and this does not disappoint. The flatbread is still warm from the ..read more

Gami Chicken

Note: I was invited to dine at Gami, however all opinions are my own. Gami Chicken and Beer is tucked away at the Canberra Centre along Bunda Street. I haven’t actually been back since my last review in 2019, so when the team asked me to come by again to try some of the new offerings, I couldn’t say no. We start off with a cocktail and mocktail (there are two choices of each at the time) which arrive in little shakers. Our waitress shakes them for us to pour into our respective glasses. Mr FPJ can’t really taste the alcohol in his cocktail, mine is citrusy yet quite sweet. As an appetiser, I ..read more

Louis (Barton)

We checked out the new Louis Bar in Barton on a Saturday night with friends (secured a babysitter woot woot). Headed up by chef Ben Willis (of Aubergine fame) I can’t help but have high expectations. Happy to say it does not disappoint. I’m glad to see more and more places having a dedicated non-alcoholic menu that doesn’t just list Coca-cola. I see four options including an Altina Pepperberry Shiraz. I ask our waiter if they do other mocktails, and yes they do. ‘What do you like?’ he asks. I prefer something fruity and he goes off with my preference to the bar. I’m given a pineapple and citru ..read more
