Worship Govardhan – not Indra Once, when Krishna and his brother Balarama were at the Govardhana hill, they saw Nanda and the Gopas of Vrindavan preparing for a ceremony.  When Krishna asked Nanda what the purpose of the ceremony was, Nanda replied that they were preparing for the annual worship of Indra.  They would offer Indra sacrifices to show their gratitude and to please him, so that he would send just enough rain for the grass to grow to feed their cattle. Hearing this, Krishna challenged Nanda, asking him if the trees, which need rain, offer prayers to Indra.  Krishna co ..read more

Krishna’s Promise One summers evening, with a full moon shining in the sky like a huge orange globe, Krishna decided to keep the promise he had made some time ago to the Gopis, to make them happy.  Krishna went to the banks of the Yamuna river and started to play his flute in the moonlight.  The music reached the houses in Vrindavan and the ears of the young Gopis who were thinking of Krishna and only Krishna – nothing else.  The music was irresistible. Each of them wanted to go to Krishna, and their madness was so intense that they did not even pause to think.  Whatever ch ..read more

Kirtan and Bhajans: Singing the name of God
Bhakti Marga UK

Difference between Kirtan, Sankirtan and Bhajans Kirtan is one of the devotional practices on the Bhakti path where one sings the Name of God. Kirtan is usually repetitive and simple as it is a free-form of singing. The person leading the kirtan sings a short simple melody with a short mantra, or the Divine names, which is repeated then by the other participants. Usually the chanting is accompanied by others playing musical instruments, such has harmonium,  mridanga/tablas and manjeeras. It is one of the easiest ways to calm the mind. Sankirtan is the same but in a congregation. Sank ..read more

Knowing the Leela’s of the Lord The month of Kartik is very dear to Lord Krishna as many of his leelas were enacted during this month, including the Damodara leela, the Govardhana Leela and the Rasa Leela.  These leelas are described in the Shreemad Bhagavatam.  The Bhagavatam is not just a book.  It reveals the highest and most intimate relationship we can have with God. It is a portal to reveal devotion. Because of this it is seen as the Lord Himself.  Each sloka of the Bhagavatam was written for the welfare and good of humanity. It is said that whoever listens to the Bha ..read more

Lord Krishna renounced the delicacies that Duryodhana offered, and ate vegetables at Vidura’s house Prasad Meaning “Prasad” means “gracious gift”.  Prasad is holy food or any gift that has been offered first in worship to the Lord, in the form of a deity, a saintly person, or Guru, before being distributed. For Vaishanvas, Prasad is of great importance.  Whenever we perform prayers, we offer food to the Lord. This food is transformed – sanctified – into Prasad. Prasad contains a blessing which helps you become purified and achieve the pure love of God. It can elevate you. Prasad is ..read more

Part 9: Who is the Spiritual Master – Kriya Yoga Master

In yoga, there is a belief that one’s progress is proportional to the effort that one makes. This may be true of many things in life, like training for a marathon, losing weight or studying for an exam, but it doesn’t apply when a Satguru is involved with your spiritual progress. The Satguru amplifies your efforts many-fold, and that’s what is called Grace. Atma Kriya Yoga is full of grace from Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda and Mahavatar Babaji.   So how does this happen? It’s a fascinating question that every Atma Kriya Yoga student should understand. It gives one a deeper appre ..read more

Part 13: Who is the Spiritual Master – Having a Hindu Guru?

I am not a Hindu can I have a Guru Hinduism as an overall tradition has no real conversion ceremony. In this sense it can be very difficult to clearly define who is a Hindu. Hinduism is more like a ‘common wealth of traditions’. It is based on universal Truths founded by the rishis of India. A Hindu could be described as one who has entered into this spiritual culture, by taking on the practices and philosophy. But however we define what a Hindu is, one does not need to actually consider themselves a Hindu to simply approach a Guru and take on board His teachings. Would I need to change my rel ..read more

Part 12: Who is the Spiritual Master – Life of a Guru

Outwardly the Guru’s life is like any other person. He eats, sleeps, laughs, cries and displays all the emotions you would expect from a normal person. He maybe educated or not, He may speak a lot or not all, He maybe very kind and compassionate or cold and withdrawn. The outside features veil his true reality. A true Master is the personification of your soul, of life, of God Himself. Every act He does is selfless, there is no trace of ‘I’ or ‘mine’, he carries no expectation from anybody. His life is for the upliftment of the world. One cannot determine the reality of a Guru by superficial a ..read more

Part 11: Who is the Spiritual Master – How to find the Guru
Bhakti Marga UK

There are different ways one can approach this question. On a practical level one can simply research the various spiritual organisations and movements and find a living authoritative Master. There are various sampradayas or chains of disciplic succession where there are Gurus. Individual Masters also exist outside of any tradition or sect. They stand alone with their own particular teaching and practices. If we are interested in learning knowledge and exploring different techniques then the practical method can work well. But if on the other hand we earnestly want to know the answers to life ..read more
