“It’s a promise!” A 1945 advert from General Electric gives this enthusiastic exclamation with an illustration of a couple next to the words. They sit on a park bench as the man, dressed in military uniform, draws a house on the ground. The home they are imagining is described as “a symbol of faith and hope and courage… A promise of gloriously happy days to come… when Victory is won.” Here, readers are asked to picture the American dream, but what defines this aspiration? CCCB’s exhibition Suburbia: Building the American Dream explores this question by tracing how this ideal lifestyle, promote ..read more

April is Autism Awareness Month. The condition, as described by the National Autistic Society (NAS), is a “lifelong developmental disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world,” with hallmarks including sensory differences and highly focused interests. It’s also known as ASD (Austism Spectrum Disorder), whilst some prefer ASC (Condition). Autistic traits can be beneficial in myriad ways – a whole host of history’s greatest thinkers, artists and scientists are speculated to have been “on the spectrum.” But the truth is that it’s challenging to be autistic in a pred ..read more

The 81st edition of the Whitney Biennial — the longest-running survey of contemporary art in the United States — returns this year with a line up that features 71 artists and collectives working between digital art, film, photography, painting and sculpture. The subtitle of the exhibition, Even Better Than the Real Thing, takes inspiration from a U2 song of the same name. It reflects on topics of “authenticity,” in the midst of a nation that is facing increasing erosion of civil liberties, from the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade to a growing number of states banning gender-affirming health ..read more

“Generous listening” is an alternative way of receiving – and processing – information. The term refers to the act of listening empathetically and trying to see the world from another person’s perspective. It has several applications, from interpersonal therapy to successful workplace management, and its importance to the arts is in the transfer of ideas. The concept was at the heart of this year’s annual Forecast Festival. In his opening speech, Artistic Director Freo Majer recognised generous listening as integral to successful artistic collaborations, acknowledging how it transforms passive ..read more

Funky minimal. This is the term Berlin-based Austrian artist Gerwald Rockenschaub (b. 1952) uses to describe his practice. With a career spanning over four decades, Rockenschaub has established himself as a master of visually-driven art that seamlessly blends elements of dynamism and vibrancy. The two words reflect a varied and rich artistry that pays attention to line and shape. Emerging from the 1980s Neo-Geo movement, he has created an oeuvre that bears the imprint of American Minimalism as well as Pop Art. Yet his work belongs to neither; instead, it weaves between genre and style, moving ..read more

Ukraine-based photographer Yevhen Samuchenko’s work primarily focuses on nature and studies the shifting relationship between humankind and the environment. He says: “The first time you see the pink salt lakes of the Kherson region in Ukraine, it feels as though you are looking at another planet.” Samuchenko conveyed the atmosphere of this location by using a drone. Since this work was created, the area became occupied by Russia, and the unique landscape was badly damaged due to flooding after the dam of the Kakhovka Reservoir was destroyed. We asked Yevhen about his project which is on displa ..read more

Photography & Literature: Annie Ernaux’s Encounters

“By choosing literary studies I elected to remain inside literature, which had become the thing of greatest value, even a way of life that led me to project myself into the novels of Flaubert or Virginia Woolf and literally live them out. Literature was a sort of continent which I unconsciously set in opposition to my social environment.” These are the words of Annie Ernaux in her lecture for the Nobel Prize. In 2022, Ernaux won the award in Literature “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory.” She is con ..read more
