Museum of Philippine Art and Culture, San Fernando An invitation from Mrs. ANDREA DIZON DOMINGO to the launch of her foundation’s MUSEUM OF PHILIPINE ARTS AND CULTURE, was an event certainly not to be missed by the staff of the Center for Kapampangan Studies, and that included me. Though many remember her of late, as the Chairman and CEO of PAGCOR (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation), she was also at some point,  a commissioner of the Bureau of Immigration and a Pampanga congresswoman. A cabinet-ful of antique santos But I remember Mrs. Domingo as an owner of a ..read more

356. Moulding Characters of Godliness: DR. JOJO VALENCIA IV AND HIS CLAY SANTOS

DR. JOJO VALENCIA IV AND HIS CLAY SANTOS For a long time now, Dr. Jojo Valencia IV has had an unconventional career, shaped by his lifelong passion for antiques and sacred art. As a child growing up in San Fernando, he held a fascination for the santos that were carried out for procession on the streets of the capital town every ‘Maleldo’ or Holy Week. In college, as a medical student in Baguio, he was asked to organize a “santo” exhibit at St. Louis University, which he successfully staged, and which prompted him to start collecting religious art. He pursued this antique collecting i ..read more

STA, MARIA MAGDALENA, RESTORED 2005 The circumstance of how this beautiful Sta. Maria Magdalena image was delivered to me was one for the books. I had been working with a Bulacan dealer for sometime, when he called to say that there was an antique santa in the market available, but I had to decide fast whether to get it or not. To make my decision faster, he offered to bring it to me in Makati, where I lived and worked. MAGDALENA, in its original state, when acquired Intrigued, I told him to pass by for me by lunchtime, hitch with him in his van, go home together to my nearby ..read more

APUNG MACAGAPUS, 1855, Holy Wednesday 2023 The heirloom image of Apung Macagapus (Scourging at the Pillar) is among the very first Holy Week processional images of the town of Sta. Ana, Pampanga. THE ANCESTRAL STA. ANA  HOUSE This 19th century holy image was owned by Maria Dolores Pangan. She passed down Apung Macagapus to her niece Angela Pangan, who eventually married Domingo P. Dizon. His family owned the statue of Sta. Ana, making them the first camareros of the original processional image of the town’s patron saint. Domingo and Angela had two children, Dr Antoni ..read more

353. The Wise Mother: SANTA ANA y NIÑA MARIA

St. Anne, (Sta. Ana) first appears in the apocryphal gospel of James in the 2nd century.  The circumstances of her late motherhood echoes that of Hannah, the mother of Samuel, and the most important scene from her life story is her meeting with Joachim (Joaquin), at Jerusalem’s Golden Gate. Sta. Ana is often shown with Maria—sometimes as an infant in her arms, or as a child teaching her how to read, an iconograhic representation made popular by the School of Caravaggio, a famed Italian painter, in beginning in the 17th century in Rome. The image of “the wise mother giving instru ..read more

349. A MINIATURE SAN JUAN EVANGELISTA

Miniature wooden santos –those measuring 8 inches or less, including the base—are a rare sight, so much so that there are collectors who specialize in them—like artist Claude Tayag. The standard for the carved figures alone is 6 inches, most often dominated by figures of the sleeping or standing Sto. Niño. Less common are miniature figures of adult saints and divinities, like San Vicente Ferrer, the Blessed Virgin. Rare still are diminutive tableaus of the Sagrada Familia, San Roque and San Isidro. Which is why, when a beautifully carved San Juan Evangelistapopped up last year I the FB Ma ..read more

MATER DOLOROSA, COMPLETED This Mater Dolorosa, made of antique ivory parts, is without doubt, my favorite because of its personal meaning to me. I was drawn to the Sorrowful Mother at the time my father was battling a fatal disease in 1998. When he passed away, I made a vow to acquire a Dolorosa image to be processed in our town during the Holy Week, in gratitude for his painless, peaceful transition.  I managed to find a vintage processional Dolorosa shortly after, and began a family tradition of participating in the annual Semana Santa prusisyons of our town.  ALL WE ..read more

One of the most quaint folk art pieces I acquired just has to be this tiny San Isidro Labrador from Bohol, that was matched with a hand-made wooden urna, fashioned from an old wooden milk crate. SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR BOHOL SANTO,  The century-old San Isidro—a shade over 5 inches, excluding the base—is a typical Bohol piece with some of its brilliant polychromy still intact, all iconographically correct. He wears a green cape over a yellow tunic, with his boots on. He has missing hands, which once held a spade.  The santo stands a mere 5+ inches tall Despite the small ..read more

A BONE TO PICK. A nameless santo found in Ermita I only remember hazy details of how I got this santo with head and hands made of bone. What I can only recall was that, I got this from one of the dealers in Ermita perhaps in the 1990s, when I started becoming drawn to ivories which I could not afford.  Nobody knew who he was, as it was without clothes, metal accessories, wig and base that may have otherwise given us clues to his identity. Because it was affordably priced, I purchased this nameless santo and became a sort of a stand-in piece, as in my mind, it was the next best ..read more
