It’s the start of a new year, and that means that another Dry January has rolled around once again. What is Dry January, you ask? Well, a lot of people have the whole “New Year New Me” mentality when the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. Popular New Year’s resolutions involve becoming a healthier version of yourself, and sometimes this healthier version includes cutting out alcohol. That’s where Dry January comes from- the elimination of alcohol for the month of January. So whether you stick to this for a day, a week, a month, or longer, I’m here to give you a few tips on how you can ..read more

Since I’m in my *cough* late 30’s, I keep telling myself that I’m going to take better care of my skin. Sure, I use SPF and cleanse and moisturize, but I feel like I could be doing so much more, you know? On top of the daily preventative aging measures, I’ve been meaning to look into different treatments to help with the fine lines and wrinkles that we worry about as we grow older. A new injectables and skincare business recently opened up on Elmwood Avenue called Maeve Aesthetics, and the owner Amanda reached out to me and asked if I would like to come in for a treatment. She knew that I was ..read more

If you’ve noticed, I haven’t published a post on here in a hot minute. Well, I started a new full-time job, have been doing a LOT of jewelry pop ups, have had a bunch of other little things happening behind the scenes, oh, and I planned an entire event from start to finish in the course of 2.5 months. As you all know, I’m the self-proclaimed mocktail queen of Buffalo. My “Mocktails of WNY” series has been wildly popular with those of you in Buffalo who are either looking for a night out without alcohol or who don’t even drink at all. So, I’m sure that you’ve seen bars and restaurants all ove ..read more

For those of us who live in Buffalo, you know that we love our nightlife. Bars, restaurants, music venues, etc. That’s why when the pandemic happened in 2020, it was such a huge blow to the entire city. Thankfully, so many places have pulled through and are thriving. In fact, some new businesses have actually opened up recently, bringing life to otherwise stagnant buildings. One of these businesses is Jack Rabbit, a bar/restaurant/and music venue in one. It took over the building that once housed JP Bullfeathers, and is a welcome addition to the Elmwood Village. I was able to sit down with Jo ..read more

As we all know by now, mocktails are my thing. Whenever I go out to dinner or just to grab drinks with friends, you’ll always find me sipping on something fruity and non-alcoholic. Recently I found myself wondering why I don’t try making these tasty beverages at home. Thankfully, Ritual Zero Proof sent me their new Rum Alternative to try! I decided to make a super yummy and refreshing Rum Punch and it was SO good and I’m super excited to create more mocktails this summer with friends. Use code NICKELCITYPRETTY at checkout to save 20% off of your online order! Non-Alcoholic Rum Punch 3 oz.&nb ..read more

Yes, that’s right. You read the title of this post correctly. And it’s exactly what it sounds like. Selfie WRLD opened up in the Boulevard Mall last week, and my friends and I were invited to the VIP night to experience the fun and, of course, take a million selfies. I’ve seen places like this in larger cities, so I was excited when I heard that one would be opening locally. If you’re curious about the process and what to expect when you arrive, here is what we experienced and a few of my little tips to get the most out of your time! When we arrived, they gave us a ring light which also held ..read more

Nickel City Gritty: Cameron Rector

I love this blog for SO many reasons. I think the main reason would have to be all of the super cool people that I’ve been able to meet through this interview series. So many of these people have become friends, and that’s priceless to me. Cam is one of these people. I met Cameron Rector in the winter of 2019 while doing some promotion through the Buffalo Blogging Network, and we quickly bonded through our love of all things supernatural (whenever I find someone who loves X-Files as much as I do, I need to hold onto them tightly) I learned that he had owned one of my favorite restaurants in B ..read more

As we all know, because of the pandemic, a lot of super cool events have had to be cancelled.  One of these events that I used to LOVE going to was the Auto Show here in Western New York.  It was always so exciting getting to see all of the new cars that were coming out and actually being able to sit in them and imagine driving down the open road with the windows rolled down, wind in your hair, and blasting 90’s music on the radio (or was that just my dream scenario?) Thankfully, Your Neighborhood Ford Stores in WNY and Rochester have came up with a fun alternative to the Auto Show ..read more

Okay, so I have a confession. I don’t usually like to invest a lot of time in things that are in the “personal care” side of the spectrum. Allow me to explain. So I love it when my hair is done and my nails are done and my makeup is just so, but sometimes it’s hard for me to enjoy sitting somewhere for hours while getting all groomed up. I have no idea why, but that’s just how I’ve always been. But my latest facial experience has me changing my mind. Jeanine Zaleski owns Ritual Skincare Spa in Hamburg, and she reached out to me recently asking if I’d like to come in for a facial. I’ve only go ..read more

Nickel City Gritty: Loti Henna Studio

And welcome back to the first Nickel City Gritty interview of 2021! Well, actually, this was the second to last interview of 2020, but life happened and I didn’t have the chance to transcribe that final two that I had done last year (bad Lindsay) but I’m doing it now! Over the summer I had met up with Lauren of Loti Henna Studio at her new space in Hamburg. I’ve gotten henna a few times before at Renaissance festivals (don’t judge me) but it was so fun to actually be in a studio space specifically designed for henna tattoos. If you aren’t familiar, henna is a paste that is applied to the skin ..read more
