My Pride and Joy at Breastfeeding my Baby

This is my second pregnancy. With my first son, I mixed fed. Our first son was born at 38 weeks but weighed just 5lbs, and after his final health visitor weighing, I was told that I needed to mix feed in order to help him gain more weight. By the time he was 9 months old, I rarely offered the breast as I struggled with the latch. With my second pregnancy I was determined to breastfeed, and so I attended various breastfeeding courses and spoke to friends and cousins who had successfully exclusively breast-fed. Our second son was born at 41+1 weeks via emergency C-section, and a cuddly 7lbs. He ..read more

Editor’s note: Some details have been changed to protect the identity of the mother in this piece. I am writing this in the hope that it might help anyone who is going through or has been through abuse. I want them to know that they are not on their own and they can still have a lovely, close, beautiful breastfeeding journey. I found ways to cope with the feelings and memories that breastfeeding sometimes triggered and to continue breastfeeding during and after abuse. And I want to share what helped me in case other mothers might find it useful. When I had my little bundle of joy (who is now f ..read more

Nursing after Breast Cancer

I was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 29, a lot younger than the typical breast cancer patient. Luckily, my family’s history with breast cancer had made me very proactive about screening, so I found the tumour early. Nonetheless I needed surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy. I remember asking my surgeon if the lumpectomy surgery (removing just the tumour and surrounding areas rather than the whole breast) would prevent me from breastfeeding. I was told that the surgery wouldn’t, but that the subsequent radiotherapy treatment would probably “kill” the mammary glands in my ..read more

After birth, most women find it helpful to take a period of rest with their new baby – this can extend for as long as you wish or are able. When they feel ready, some mothers may choose to continue their previous forms of exercise, or start something new. You may wonder whether they are able to introduce exercise alongside breastfeeding. For most people, the answer is yes. Standard exercise does not impact on milk supply or content. In this article we discuss some of the common questions around breastfeeding and exercise, and consider instances where some more planning may be required, for in ..read more

Breastfeeding My Baby with Down Syndrome

As soon as I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to breastfeed my baby if possible. At 22 weeks we were told our baby had a congenital heart problem called a complete AVSD (a large hole in the heart), we were also informed that the baby had a problem with their kidneys and were advised to have further testing to see what was causing these multiple problems. We had further scans and an amniocentesis leading to the diagnosis that the baby also had Down syndrome. For me, these antenatal diagnoses gave me time to prepare and research before our baby was born. One thing I was told by my consultant and mi ..read more

November 2013: My first baby is finally here, and I am over the moon. But I am also leaving the hospital with formula forced upon me and already combination feeding 24 hours after a long, medicated birth. The midwives’ comments about the size of my breasts and the flatness of my nipples floating in my head, I feel my body may well let me down… again. I had finally been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal disorder) just three years earlier, and while I felt relief at finally having a name to put to the symptoms I had been experiencing for over 20 years (weight fluctuation ..read more

When I was pregnant with my son Theo, I was asked by my GP at my first pregnancy screening appointment if I wanted to breastfeed. My answer to my GP was “I’m not sure”, to which I got a quick, “oh but you should, it’s hard but good”. This response became a familiar one with the idea that “Breast was best but hard work”. I was open to either option of feeding my baby as I thought I would find everything to do with caring for a baby hard, so I had no strong preference between formula and breastmilk! When I had my son, I started to breastfeed with some prior knowledge from antenatal classes and b ..read more
