Lost Palms, Precinct and Currumbin Valley – three Gold Coast breweries to visit
Back Of The Ferry

Three wonderful breweries to visit, and a nice little crawl to do if you are heading to Coolangatta Airport afterwards. I started my mini-brewery crawl at the delightful and small Lost Palms Brewery in Miami. What it lacks in size of venue it makes up for in the number and strength of its beers. Some of these absolutely pack a punch. It is probably the most eclectic and diverse range of beers packed into 10 taps that I’ve seen. From a lager and XPA to a Quad Blueberry Pancake Sout and Blue Lemonade Soda Ale. Great takeaway fridge as well. I opted for the coffee cream ale called Random Access ..read more

Madocke Bier – a glass (or three) of Belgium on the Goldie
Back Of The Ferry

The Gold Coast craft brewing scene is very solid and threw plenty of surprises on my latest trip. Shocking weather prevented me participating in aquatic activities and I was forced indoors. A quick Google search revealed some names new to me and I Ubered my way to Ashmore, a suburb known for its shopping centre. Now it can also be known as the home of Madocke Bier Brewing Company. The very friendly owners are a Belgian family that arrived on the Gold Coast in 2016 and they are very passionate about their Belgian heritage. The name Madocke comes from a series of poems written in the 13th cent ..read more

Alex Surf Club and Heads of Noosa Japanese Lagers

The photo is schizenhausen, but I’ve found a sensational place to drink on the Sunshine Coast. I’ve previously sung the praises of the Rainbow Beach SLSC and its magnificent views. Queensland Surf Life Saving Club. The Alex Surf Club outlook is very good, but The Rainbow Beach SLSC still has it covered. Where the Alex Surf Club has Rainbow covered is its beer menu. Sunshine Coast breweries have their taps prominent alongside the usual Macros (Great Northern, Caarrrlton Draught etc). There’s been some hubbub about the proliferation of Japanese rice lagers and coincidentally I happened to get ..read more

Having a blast at BrookieFest

Congratulations to all involved in BrookieFest. 3 days of fun and frivolity at seven wonderful Brookvale venues over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Next year, I’ll be making a more concerted effort to clear the diary and get to more of the wackier events and come prepared for things like the Budgy Smuggler’s Bird Bath at Manly Spirits. The Brookvale Arts District has done a marvellous job of fostering a community spirit in recent years. The vibe on Sunday when I attended was just fabulous. Just people being happy at happy places. The BrookieFest passport worked a treat and the deals were good ..read more

One of Tassie’s finest in Richmond – Fox Friday

In 2022, I spent a couple of days in Hobart and really enjoyed the craft beer scene. Didn’t encounter a bad venue, but the clear standout for their skull-cracking IPAs and a memorable bowl of Chilli was Fox Friday. Was in Richmond, Melbourne with old mate Kieran #75 who suggested we go to this new place called Fox Friday. Yep – Fox Friday has a Melbourne location. And bloody good it is too. Some of the beers come from Hobart, but some are being brewed on site in the new facility. The space is absolutely awesome and has a range of high and low seating. The food is exceptional and I’ll be back ..read more

Say it ain’t so – Brews News has written its last word
Back Of The Ferry

And just like that, one of the behemoths of the Craft Beer journalism world has hung up the keyboard. When I drive to my weekender in the Hunter there’s three podcasts that I rotate through. Locked on Cavs, Super70sSports and Radio Brews News. It would seem that they’ve recorded the last one. 451 episodes is a pretty bloody good run and to keep a beer news site going since 2010 is a bloody outstanding effort. Matt Kirkegaard has been writing about beer for 20 years and Brews News became a thing in 2010. His last article can be found here. I came close to meeting Matt a couple of times early ..read more

The Good Bar – serving good beer in Brookvale (and BrookieFest)

When I lived in the insular peninsula in the late 80s I owned a few 70s cars which necessitated a number of visits to the numerous wreckers in the back streets of Brookvale. Fast forward 35 years and now breweries and distilleries proliferate in similar numbers to the wreckers that are long gone (though there are still plenty of mechanics around). Back of the Ferry loves a good trivia night and a new one has sprung up at The Good Bar, which is the Brookvale home of Goodradigbee Distillers – and until Saturday (Broken Bay Brewing) the newest venue in Brookvale. The distillery’s name comes fro ..read more

Broken Bay Brewing Co – Welcome to Brookvale

How exciting! The Brookvale Brewery Crawl has a new Eastern extremity with the opening of Broken Bay Brewing Co at 218 Harbord Rd, Brookvale. By my reckoning Broken Bay Brewing Co becomes the seventh brewery in Brookvale to brew on its own premises after 4 Pines, Nomads, Dad & Dave’s, 7th Day, Bucketty’s and Freshwater Brewing. Chubb’s will soon make it eight when they hook up their own equipment in their Winbourne St site. And let’s not forget SurfCraft brewing – Brookvale’s gypsy brewer whose beers are available at the Brookvale Surf Club in Orchard Road. Whilst Harbord Road is a busy ..read more

Adelaide breweries inside the Terraces
Back Of The Ferry

Adelaide is very famously known for its grid where the CBD is contained by four terraces which in turn are surrounded by parkland. Inside the four terraces are at least four breweries and countless classic pubs. So plenty of options for post conference libations. I’ve visited Lady Burra Brewhouse on a number of occasions and it always does to job. In times of gloom for craft beer, it is terrific to see Lady Burra surviving and indeed thriving if its expansion plans are anything to go by. Lady Burra has plenty of taps and a really good kitchen. I absolutely love their chilli bowl. All bases a ..read more

Induction – Kirsty #152

Another inductee from another land, though Kirsty has spent plenty of time in Oz lately – she might be feeling part Orstrayan. Kirsty was a big contributor to Back of the Ferry’s recent story on Drinking at Wembley. Fittingly Inductee #3 was on board to oversee proceedings as Kirsty’s home town is 10 miles from where Charlie grew up. Favourite beverage: Gin & Tonic Favourite sport to spectate: Rugby Area of trivial expertise: Pop Music of the 1980s Favourite pub of all time and why: The Bungalow in Cape Town. A wonderful place by the water to watch sunsets with great food and drink. Induc ..read more
