Spooky Fire Hydrant Its been a while since I did a blog post. The process has been missed. Self reflection n’ all. Halloween is on the horizon and its got me feeling a bit spooky, I knew I’d want to try and do some halloween themed artwork, I was not anticipating waking up one morning with the intense desire to create a fire hydrant. Two birds with one stone, a spooky fire hydrant. The premise seemed simple enough, I started with some reference images of fire hydrants. Red handed for just simpleton typing fire hydrant into google images. Cylinders, thats really all this is. Off we go. Ap ..read more

Circuit The time I have to work on Circuit is quickly closing as my trip to Annecy quickly arrives. I have pushed hard on this project, learning a new asset pipeline using Substance Painter and Substance Designer, both have been pleasurable to learn and work with. After the initial hurdles of learning how best to utilize the software my asset production workflow and in turn, speed has improved. These last few weeks have been difficult to balance, with my partner and I having our own personal schedules clash it has been difficult to work together. I have been pushing asset creation to as far a ..read more

Rendering Now that Lisa has finished the animation for her film, I have been helping with rendering and final compositing. For this we set up a number of PC’s in an empty room to render. Once final render frames came through I could put them into Nuke and composite them together into the baseplate images to create the final frames of the film. This was the first time I used both AOVs and nuke to composite image sequences. To get the shadows of just the characters I used a shadow matte with the characters, minus an empty shadow matte of the environment to create essentially a difference shadow ..read more

Circuit Environment Progression For a 3D film to have 3 unique environments I need to be smart with how I balance my time on asset creation. Although I did try to be smart with my time, I definitely fell into some pitfalls of over modelling and texturing some unimportant assets. I am very proud of my Jerrycan but I shouldn’t be The Workshop This is the first environment I started working on as it was deemed the most important. For this environment I wrote gathered a bunch of resources relating to things that could be found in both a general and car garage. I opted to lean towards a car garag ..read more

Supporting other Projects

Amongst working on Circuit with Jordan I have been taking on some extra bits of work with helping out other peoples projects. Namely: Dan, Lisa and Skye. I originally pitched myself as wanting to help with peoples projects, although the journey has changed, I want to stick to what I said about helping. Supporting the other films is important to me because I know how many disciplines there are and how overwhelming it can be. I don’t think anyone’s film should suffer because of a single aspect they struggle with, especially when someone else can quite simply take on the role. Daniel Elliff: Fo ..read more

Substance Painter Now that the character model has its sculpted details of various panels, I began trying to figure out how to get him into substance painter so that Jordan could begin adding surface details. Once I had him in substance painter (so I thought) I decided to play with the tools and see what comes out. I thought to myself, ‘this seems easy enough’. I passed the substance prep file over to Jordan for texturing and off he went. In the mean time I had a curiosity about  substance, it was definitely much more inviting that I had first imagined so I explored and researched beyond ..read more

Circuit So I’ve teamed up with Jordan Rutter on his project. Immediately I feel more comfortable and within my element. I have begun with character concepting for the security/police character and will be taking on the task of rigging Circuit and adding extra details to his model. For the security, Jordan specified that he would be more of a defensive build rather than aggressive, with a large form that acts as a blockade. With this in mind I looked into police uniforms, riot gear, police cars and a glimpse at how other robot enforcers have been developed within animation. The search for a c ..read more

My project is going into the archive. I may revisit the ideas later but right now, I cannot deal. I’ve done this because I have been having doubts about my degree, my own capabilities, general low self esteem, stressing and just generally everything feeling awful. All pinned upon having to come up with an idea. I don’t fully understand my process or why I find this so difficult but I’ve found so much relief in putting this to rest. The project took the form of exploring the loneliness of gaming addiction, caught up in computer screens and the isolation of a single room. I think the proje ..read more
