As you may have noticed, I haven’t posted on here for a while. The reason for this is that life has changed a lot since I started this blog almost 5 years ago, and I’ve started to feel the things I wanted to write about weren’t really relevant. When I started Digital Motherhood I had a daughter just about to start school and was juggling being a mum with working 30 hours a week. Life was tough and this was a place to share my thoughts, and later experiences and advice. I’m really pleased that over the years people have found my blog posts useful, and many still get a lot of views. As you may k ..read more

8 expert tips for new freelancers
Digital Motherhood | Freelance Expat Working Mum
by Sarah | Digital Motherhood

I’ve been freelancing full-time for 16 months now and apart from a small blip in March-April (thanks Covid) each month has been busier than the last. I’ve been asked by friends and blog readers for tips for new freelancers, so thought I would put some together as a blog post. I won’t lie and say it’s easy, there are many pros and cons to being a freelancer, not having a set payday and regularly having to chase invoices are two things I definitely don’t enjoy. For us though it was definitely a good decision overall and it has enabled us to move to Spain and work less hours. So, if you want to s ..read more

Do you feel as though you’ve had a bit of a crash course in using Zoom recently? If you’ve never had a job where you’ve had to hold online meetings, I imagine it can be a bit daunting to suddenly have to hold Zoom meetings, especially if you have a lot of children attending! And if you have had to explain to your kids how to use Zoom for school work that can also be a challenge. Have you even had time to think about how to hold safe Zoom meetings? Whether you’re an adult or child, it’s always important to make sure you know how to stay safe online and protect your privacy. I’ve used Zoom for a ..read more

How to celebrate Halloween at home with kids

No one is sure what state the world will be in by the end of October (at this rate literally anything could happen!) but it’s looking increasingly likely that there’s not going to be any trick or treating this Halloween. Even if it is allowed, I doubt many parents will feel comfortable taking their kids to knock on strangers’ doors at the moment, so I’ve put together a list of ways you can still celebrate Halloween at home with kids this year… Disclaimer: Some of the links included below are affiliate links, meaning that I may earn a small commission at no cost to you if you make a p ..read more

How to get better sleep as a parent
Digital Motherhood | Freelance Expat Working Mum
by Sarah | Digital Motherhood

Sleep is the great ally of parents. It helps rejuvenate us, helps us restore the taxing process of parenthood on our minds and bodies, and generally helps us gain a break from our loved, but often tiring little demons! However, unfortunately, all parents will know that sleep can often come in short supply. Even if you take it in turns to wake up and deal with your crying children (this can last even until their early teenage years for a range of issues, such as night sickness or terrors), sleep comes at a premium. So, sometimes it can be worthwhile to get the best quality sleep you can. But ho ..read more

An update from Spain…
Digital Motherhood | Freelance Expat Working Mum

I haven’t blogged much recently, it’s a bit of a weird time to write new posts and talk about ‘normal’ things when life isn’t very normal! I’ve had a few messages from real-life friends and social media friends recently asking about how things in Spain are as stories in the UK press haven’t been to positive, so I thought I would post an update on what’s going on here right now… Covid You’ve probably read that Spain is experiencing a ‘second wave’ right now, but while there are more cases here that seems to be partly down to more widespread testing. The cases are mainly in younger people (who h ..read more

How to get work done when you have kids at home
Digital Motherhood | Freelance Expat Working Mum

Working from home with schools closed for the last few months has been difficult, but for many the battle isn’t over yet. During the summer holidays this year we don’t have holiday clubs or childcare to help keep the kids entertained while we work from home. Homeschooling before the summer was hard, and on one hand I’m definitely grateful that we don’t have to try and get school work done, but on the other hand at least it was something for the kids to do. Now we have to try and provide entertainment as well as getting work done! Even if there are two of you working from home it’s not easy to ..read more

9 places to visit within an hour of Alicante

If you are planning a holiday to Spain, Alicante is a great city to  add to your list of Spanish destinations. All of the major airlines fly into Alicante-Elche airport so it’s easily accessible, and only a 2.5 hour flight from the UK. There are so many things to do in Alicante itself, both with kids and without, but if you are looking to explore some places outside the city then you have plenty to choose from as there are so many great places to visit within an hour of Alicante. We live approx 40 minutes from Alicante and have spent the last year (and before that on holidays) exploring s ..read more

7 lessons freelancers can learn from a global pandemic
Digital Motherhood | Freelance Expat Working Mum

Well that was an interesting few months wasn’t it? When we quit our jobs and moved to Spain last year to become full-time freelancers we hadn’t really planned for a global pandemic shutting down the world! When businesses have to cut back, the first thing they cancel is contractors, especially for things that are ‘nice to have’ such as social media and marketing. I didn’t qualify for any help here in Spain as  my business didn’t physically have to close its doors so having contracts cancelled was definitely stressful. Luckily we survived and business has picked up massively since the end ..read more
