Too often we may see the term ‘metabolism’ thrown about on the internet. Perhaps lines like; “they just have a very fast metabolism” is mentioned, which may well be true. Or the infamous “one trick Doctors don’t want you to know about!”, and adverts on “how to supercharge your metabolism” that still occasionally reappear on my Facebook feed (Yes Facebook, I know I need to shift my excess weight and lose some pounds, thank you!). The word is used a lot, but do you really know what “metabolism” refers to? Or what your metabolic health actually is and why it matters? Or how to alter it in a benef ..read more

A topic that is often discussed in Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is Libido. This is because there is a correlation between low testosterone and lowered desire for sexual thoughts/fantasies and sex acts including intercourse, collectively referred to as Libido [1]. Why is this seen? It’s well-known both anecdotally from clinical experience and seen in the literature that libido tends to decrease with age in both men and women [2][3]. There is a period in the chronology of all healthy males where sexual desire peaks. This is during puberty. Why does this happen during this developmental ..read more

Those who have read my previous work will be aware that my work predominantly focuses on the male aspect of the topic. However, while The Men’s Health Clinic may appear targeted to solely men, there are also pressing issues we need to address in the world of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for women, too. Female HRT is more well known among the general population than TRT, but the in’s and outs of what constitutes a proper HRT protocol is still left to the gp. This article will explain a bit more about HRT for women and the benefits of including Testosterone in female HRT. This is an importa ..read more

Commencing Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is not a small decision for one to take. There are a multitude of considerations to be made.  The first one being, is it clinically indicated? Then of course, if it is indicated, what are the impacts on one’s life, health, and longevity? There is a big consideration that needs to be taken into account for many and that is, do I want a family in the future? There are a significant proportion of patients commencing TRT that are less than 40 years of age who are yet to have a family but would like to in the future [1]. In order to understand ..read more

If you’ve much interest in TRT , then you likely know a bit about the Hypothalamic Pituitary Testicular Axis (HPTA). You’ll know how relatively ‘simple’ it can be; hypothalamus in the brain produces a hormone called Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH), which tells the anterior pituitary in the brain to release Luteinizing & follicle stimulating hormones (LH & FSH respectively), which tell the gonads (testes in the case of the HPTA) to make Testosterone (T). Some of that T gets converted into Oestradiol (E2) and some to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and some is made in the testes. DHT, T ..read more

But it’s not just our brave veterans who have been exposed to the risk of TBI. TBI could be induced by car or motorcycle crashes, falls, sports injuries, and assaults. Anything that strikes a blow to your head could be a cause. It presents itse ..read more
