Photo New Scientist A team of British and American scientists have discovered a way to slow the growth of breast cancer stem cells in the lab. The study led by Dr Bruno Simões and Professor Rob Clarke from The University of Manchester could eventually lead to combination drug therapies on previously untreatable breast cancers.  25% of all cancer diagnoses are for Breast Cancer and it is the fifth most common cause of death in women worldwide. Around three quarters of women who have breast cancer have what are known as oestrogen receptor positive tumours. Some breast cancer cells have ..read more

Obesity is a direct path to many forms of cancer in later life, including cancer of the bowel, kidneys, ovaries and liver. Research in USA and UK has now shown that obesity not only increases cancer risk but also puts one at highest risk of severe Covid-19, regardless of age. Check yourself for a healthy weight. Losing even a few pounds if you are overweight or obese can lower your cancer as well as your risk of severe coronavirus complications if your test positive. Senior citizens who have self-isolated during the coronavirus pandemic have probably not taken adequate exercise, spending more ..read more

Huge Bottleneck for NHS Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
The Caring Cancer Trust | Helping kids with cancer

As the Government begins to ease the coronavirus lockdown, we can expect the United Kingdom NHS to attempt to reach some semblance of normality. We fear however that it will be difficult for the NHS to cope with the Cancer backlog which has built up over the past three months. Surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy has been postponed for over 20,000 cancer patients during the pandemic. Some 2.1million adults have missed vital cancer screening for breast, cervical and bowel cancer while the hospitals cope with a surge in virus cases. Such delays in diagnosis and/or treatment could mean that ..read more

Say ‘’Hello Summer!’’ Say ‘’Goodbye Skin Cancer!’’

Forgive me if I appear to be a party pooper now that we all wish to laze on a beach after the long coronavirus lockdown. Sunbathing in the summer sunshine lifts our spirits, banishes depression and will bring joy to our hearts after the coronavirus worry of the past months. But don’t forget that over-exposure to the sun’s warm rays can cause skin cancer. Cancer Prevention is better than Cancer Cure!  We can reduce the risk of skin cancer, (melanoma), by remembering to protect our bare skin from excess exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It is essential that we engage in good ..read more

Photo courtesy Snow Monkey Park, Japan The UK government’s initial promise of a vaccine by September this year appeared to be too good to be true. It obviously was! This will be sad news for the many Cancer patients with immune systems compromised by chemotherapy treatment who must self-isolate until a covid-19 vaccine is available.  The Oxford University experimental Astrazeneca vaccine, known as ChAdOx1 nCov-19, is already being clinically trialled on humans at Oxford, London, Southampton and Bristol hospitals and the UK Government has ploughed an extra £38 million into production ..read more

The Mail on Sunday reports that The British Health Secretary has been plunged into a fresh virus row after it emerged thousands of cancer patients were being denied coronavirus-safe treatments that could save their lives. The Health Secretary was challenged to act over protests that half of England’s cancer centres were still not routinely providing advanced radiotherapy although they had the equipment to do so, despite doctors insisting it was the safest way to treat many tumours during the virus crisis. The ‘stereotactic ablative’ technique (SABR) can spare patients dozens of exhausting hosp ..read more

Stay at Home. Update
The Caring Cancer Trust | Helping kids with cancer

The government in England have now given us online guidance and updates, (see Further Reading), on what we can and can’t do while the coronavirus pandemic is with us. Devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland continue coronavirus lockdown. Wherever you live in the UK or, for that matter, anywhere in the world, if your immune system has been compromised by cancer, stay at home and avoid face-to-face contact. Even minor infections can turn serious if you have cancer.  Shield yourself, keeping away from sick people, and keep washing your hands thoroughly and frequently. Ne ..read more
