Here’s an AWESOME blast from the past prior blog that’s incredible & true! Enjoy Yes, it’s 100% TRUE, there’s an open grave on Indian Key! This is not a tale of horror for one of those ‘Ghost Tours’ nor Halloween prank… it’s REAL! A former resident of the island Jacob Housman was in fact buried here in May of 1841 after being crushed between the hull of two ships. An inscription on the marble stone marker reads: ‘To his friends he was sincere, to his enemies he was kind’. The grave was later vandalized and the whereabouts of the body is unknown. History Bonus: Did you know that t ..read more

Wild Peacock Shhhhhhh… this is one that I’ve SELDOM told anyone, so this is our little secret ok! Want something very different to do this weekend, I know a place where wild peacocks have been known to frequent! I discovered this place totally by accident fully intending to head down a side road only to get a better view of the 18 mile stretch bridge. I turned the corner and ‘Ba Bam’ there they were on both sides of the road with the male peacock strutting his stuff in full plumage trying to impress a mate (featured photo)… but as you see in the picture below, t ..read more

WOW… LOOK WHAT I FOUND! Looking back at this past Sunday’s post 10/21/18 you’ll find an error in the PHOTO so read the following paragraphs! The creators of this little seen mile marker post made a BIG mistake when writing a certain city and state… can you spot it? Very good ‘Mr. Map Quest’ you found it! Highlighted in the featured photo are both Sturgis, ND and Mt. Rushmore, SD… one of which is wrong. Since having been to both (seen below) I can assure you that Sturgis has not succeeded from South Dakota nor picked up and moved northward! Yes my road scholar fr ..read more

Washington Crossing The Delaware In Key West

Is this really a painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware? Not quite, but it’s local artist Rick Worth’s rendition of ‘George Washington Crossing To Freedom’ painted in 1991. Seeing this for the first time I was confused in why such a mural would be here. Closer inspection and comparing it to the original “George Washington Crossing The Delaware” which now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, I think he did a good job. He wasn’t trying to duplicate Emanuel Leutze 1851 masterpiece. To start off with the flag is a combination of multi-colo ..read more

Too AWESOME! I love catchy names and signs, upon seeing this one I jumped out in the pouring rain and snapped this one for you! Can you imagine being asked “Where do you live?” and answering “A road with No Name”! You can find this out-of-the-way wonder by turning off of US-1 (bayside) at Mile Marker 30.4 onto Key Deer Blvd then an immediate right (maybe 50 ft) onto Wilder Road, then winding the rest of your way a few miles by turning left on South Street, then right on Ave. ‘B’, then veer onto Watson Blvd and drive past the “No Name Pub” and over ..read more

Giant Lobster Simply put, one of the BEST FREE attractions in the entire Florida Keys! Straight out of the movies comes this Giant Lobster the size of a building! Built out of fiberglass and authentic as can be, it stands a good 14′ tall and CANNOT be found on any dinner menu in the U.S. This tourist trap photo opportunity can be found at Mile Marker 86.8 on the right side of the road heading south on US-1. Believe me, you can’t miss it and frankly don’t want to miss it either. It sits in the parking lot of a group of Artist shops known as the ‘Rain Barrel’ that is ..read more

Key West’s Wrap Around Porches

Key West’s Wrap Around Porch What a House… pure eye candy! The ONLY one that I’ve noticed with a complete wrap around porch. The white picket railings, gingerbread woodwork, and colonial posts are all astonishing compliments to what is already a true work of artistic Key West style home. The island calming colors with its porch supports are a combo that will soothe the soul. Though there are many homes with partial wrap around porches in Key West, I guarantee you won’t see another like this down here. This is definitely an eye catcher and a thrill to see if you swing by t ..read more

The sign reads: ‘Self-Guided Eco-Tours No Charge’ and in deed it is! I’m here at the Florida Key’s Wild Bird Sanctuary also known as the Wild Bird Center. You can find this hidden FREE gem at Mile Marker 93.8 on the right side of the road (bayside) of US-1 South towards Key West. The sanctuary is open to the public and is advertised on the sign on US-1 as FREE to the public and officially it is although they request that you make a donation (as seen below) upon entering or exiting. Since first pulling into the parking lot for a quick photo several years ago, I’ve put off touring the facil ..read more

Duval Street Parades

As police sirens whale your heads turn seeing what in the world it is finding out that it’s one of Key West many parades down its most famous road Duval Street. Reminiscent of New Orleans, Key West blocks off its main streets and allow parades to wow and amaze its awaiting and many times unsuspecting viewers. Most that I’ve seen here on Duval Street were ones that I never knew anything about in advance. Pictured above and below was the Cuban-American Pride Parade lead by a motorcycle police escort (seen below) followed by 20 or so dancers, a car carrying the parade King & Queen a ..read more
