Morningside Academy: Not the “Michaela of America”, but just as important

Today I visited Morningside Academy, an evidence-informed school that I featured on Progressively Incorrect last month. While Morningside is famous amongst educators with a behavior analysis background, it is practically unknown by teachers – including me, until recently – on EduTwitterX. The few short hours I spent at Morningside left me absolutely blown away by this charming school, and I’ve become a major believer in behavioral education. What makes Morningside so special? Perhaps the most striking feature of Morningside is that students are not grouped by age or grade, but homogeneously by ..read more

Every week, I write a short blurb about teaching and learning for my school’s parent newsletter. I’ve decided to post old ones on this site from time to time. If you’re interested in training on the Science of Learning for this or next year, please get in touch. – Dr. G What is the Science of Learning? Parents sometimes assume that most of the teaching their child receives is “based on” or “informed by” research. In some cases, it is. At the moment, there is a movement spreading across the globe – from the UK, to Australia, to pockets of the United States – around what is called the “science o ..read more

In a previous post, I talked about 10 Popular Yet Questionable Instructional Coaching Dogmas. If you go to that post, you can listen to me talk about them on Teachers Talk Radio. While the responses varied, I think it’s clear that not everyone agrees with the conventional wisdom in instructional coaching. Here are the results of those polls. Do they tell us anything? If you're an instructional coach or have experienced instructional coaching, let me hear your t ..read more

I recently shared a step-by-step strategy for Error Correction on Twitter. It comes from Direct Instruction, but it is a generic strategy that can be used by anyone wishing to get better at this important facet of teaching. It involves 7 steps, which are summarized in this slide from a NIFDI training I recently attended: Curious practitioners might look at this sequence and wonder what the evidence base is for error correction. For that, I highly recommend this paper by Embry and Biglan (2008), which includes a huge table of scientific findings from the science of behavior. Among those are ov ..read more
