Eloquens have released a list of their most popular authors for 2023. I was blest to win the award this year. I found Eloquens through my friend Lance Rubin maybe 5-6 years ago. I added a small amount of content and it has always been well received by the Eloquens team and the vibrant community they have created. Eloquens should be well proud of themselves for the platform that brings so many people together. I have posted my best work on Eloquens for a number of years and I do believe this is the platform has grown over the years with more and more authors entering the program. So to be t h ..read more

I joined a freelance website and saw that one of the companies had put raw data on the site to test the market. I took the raw data, modified it so it was anonymised and created a dashboard reeport a couple of hours late. I went to bed woke up the next day and when I went to send the reprot to the client the posting had disappearsed. Their loss is your gain. I enhanced the daashboard added a heat map and completed it nicely. The final result is as follows. As the report is made entirely from Pivot tables it allows the entire report to move and change with the changing of the slicer. Regions c ..read more

The dashboard provides a helpful overview of the overall status of a project. Project tracking dashboards typically focus on actual versus budget, resource allocation, key risks, completion rates and a range of other metrics. They can flag when parts of a project are going poorly and help with the maintenance of the project as much of the information is right there in front of you. Photo by Mika Baumeister on Unsplash With the advent of Power Pivot the task of flipping data is made very simple. The Unpivot Other Columns command is a bit of a game changer. It easily moves data from horizontal to the more database friendly vertical range very nicely. For the more old school amoungst us here is the same task done with VBA. I touched on the opposite of this process in the article Convert Vertical Range to Horizontal with VBA. The following is a common requirement where you have the months in many columns and need to move them to a single column while retaining all of the de ..read more

Photo by Tono Graphy on Unsplash Hiding rows with Excel VBA the simple way using a union range. Typically if you want to hide rows very fast with VBA the autofilter is the tool of choice, in a single line with one swift move thousands of rows can be hidden. It has always been my preferred method when dealing with multiple rows to hide. Recently I had a problem where I needed to use the filter on the same range for other purposes so had to asses each cell individually. If you know anything about VBA when the program has to loop over multiple cells it can lag, especially if it needs to perform ..read more

Over the past few days I have been upgrading a new dashboard - well re-purposing an old dashboard one that I had been using for a training course for the past 10 years. The model is highly interactive as it has a roll over for the years meaning moving the mouse over the years in the top middle will change the data in the slicer. The above was the starting image which was the result of an old course of mine. It needed the years updated, the calculation engine updating and the report extended to fill the screen more completely. It seemed like only a little bit of work but ended up taking days n ..read more

Photo by Michael Dziedzic on Unsplash The Replace function in Excel is fast - really fast and it works very nicely on a range of data to find and replace data. However, the replace function has a hidden bug and this article explores the problem with an example and a video. The following is a simple example of the executable line of code replacing Sports to Sport in range B1 to B10. Sheet1.Range("B1:B10").Replace "Sports", "Sport" The issue I have with the code is when you have made a search on the entire workbook the above code is disregarded and the entire workbook is changed. It happened ..read more
