“Carl Schiller” Double French Horn

Hello all! I have been looking for a somewhat cheap double horn to use for fun in college with friends for a little while now. A local music store reached out to me with an offer for a used “Carl Schiller double french horn” priced at $899. Does anyone know anything about the brand or the horn itself? Like I mentioned, I don’t need a super amazing horn for auditions; just one that is worth the price. I have worked with this store before, so I may be able to negotiate the price down a bit as well. (Apologies for the blurry pictures.. I might be able to see it in person in a couple of days ..read more

Conn 8D manufacturing date and location

I've been curious about my Conn 8D horn that I bought last year. It has a mechanical linkage for the thumb valve and string linkage for the rest, which I thought was interesting. I'm not entirely sure when or where my horn was manufactured, (my guess is 1986 according to the website) but I'd like to get some more opinions. The horn itself is in really good condition so it's possible that it was made earlier. The serial number is 614843 and it has the fancy engraving near the bell that says, "CG Conn 8D Made in USA." I have no clue which city it was manufactured though, so if anyone knows ..read more

I would like to ask for some recommendations on how to mic the horn for live performances. Any specific microphone recommendation, model, or type of microphone. The idea would be for concerts with drums, electric guitar, bass, etc. Where I need to be mic'd up close and personal. submitted by /u/nicodalto [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Need help prepping for a solo.

I recently switched from Trumpet to Horn this year for high school band. My school has a thing called Solo & Ensemble where we each have to play one solo and at least one ensemble. I'm a sophomore and last year when I did this, it went very well for my solo but terrible on my ensemble. I thought I played well on my solo and I went all-out but I had my ensemble like 10 minutes later and I felt like it completely flopped. I ran out of breath and I had to sacrifice my tone just so I could play the notes. This year I'm doing both a horn solo and a horn ensemble. To be honest, I'm not good at ..read more

Help with french horn???

Hey guys, So really quickly just a little bit of background info: I am a trumpet player but recently was asked by my band director to play french horn in one of our junior ensembles instead. It should also be noted that there are no other french horn players/teachers at my school and therefore no one knowlegable about it at all. Now for the problem - I cant play it. I belive the horn is in Bb, not F or a double horn, but the Bb fingerings I have found on the internet simply do not work. Now, I am aware that french horn is very embouchure dependent due to the small intervals and everything ..read more
